Mears 14th at Phoenix - Race Report

MEARS RUNS FROM BACK TO FRONT EN ROUTE TO 14TH IN PHOENIX

Germain Racing accounts for third best finishing Ford and now sits inside the Top 20 in points

   

Avondale, AZ (March 3, 2013) – When Casey Mears and his GEICO team arrived at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend, they were looking to recover from heartbreak dealt to them in Daytona, where contact with Tony Stewart ended their day prematurely.  Rather than dwell on the past, Mears and his GEICO team chose to view Phoenix as the start of their 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season and move forward. 

 Unfortunately, the opening practice on Friday did little in the way of soothing the soul when Mears and his GEICO Fusion sat 40th of 43 cars on the speed chart.  The subsequent qualifying session would then prove challenging when the #13 Germain Racing entry ended up qualifying 43rd, last on the starting grid.  After a night huddled up in a hotel lobby, crew chief Bootie Barker and his engineering staff found some speed and Saturday’s practice session saw Mears jump to 26th on the charts.

 Overcast skies and reasonable temperatures welcomed NASCAR fans to the racetrack on Sunday for the Subway Fresh Fit 500.  Having qualified last, Mears and his #13 GEICO Fusion had their work cutout for them when the green flag set the field underway for 312-laps of racing.  Seemingly oblivious to his situation, the Bakersfield, CA, native jumped all the way up to the 29th position by lap three.  A caution flag on lap 21 allowed Mears the opportunity to bring his GEICO Fusion to the attention of the Germain Racing pit crew, who promptly returned him the racing surface four spots better (27th) than when he entered pit road.  He would continue to maintain his position and sit solidly in the top 25 for most of the afternoon.

 With 70 laps to go, things got faster in the world of Mears and his #13 GEICO Ford Fusion would go on a tear that saw him strategically maneuver his way to the front of the field.  It all started on the lap 242 restart when the #13 GEICO machine took off from the 26th position.  He re-entered the top 25 on lap 246 and just seven laps later he was holding court in 22nd place.  While the majority of drivers turned their best laps early in the event, Mears was getting quicker as the race wore on, recording his fastest lap of the day on lap 255.  He chased down Jamie McMurray to take over 21st with 36 laps to go and then set his sights on Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.  It would take Mears just ten laps to track down the Roush Fenway driver and capture 20th after a two lap door-to-door battle.

 The final caution would be displayed with just three laps left in the advertised distance of the race, resulting in a green-white-checker finish.  Mears would not need to pit under caution, as Barker had topped off fuel during his previous visit to pit road under yellow on lap 236.  While the bulk of the field sat in their cars concerned about fuel levels, Mears and his GEICO Fusion sat waiting to attack on the final two laps.

 Mears restarted from the 19th position when the green flag turned the field loose for the final time on Sunday afternoon.  The #13 GEICO Ford Fusion made its way speedily through the field on the intense closing laps and when the checkered flag began to wave, Mears recorded a 14th place finish in race number two of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.  After qualifying 43rd, Mears and his GEICO team picked up 29 positions en route to their Top 15 finish.

 “It was a fun day because the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion was fast and it felt great being able to go chase people down and pass them,” a smiling Mears said after climbing from his GEICO Fusion.  “We made changes to the car and they started to work and you could gradually see our progress over the course of the race.  I’m so proud of the guys on this GEICO team because everyone could’ve hung their heads and mentally checked out after Friday, but they didn’t; they kept working hard and today we showed our character as a team.”  He joked, “I like to pass cars and I got to do a lot of that today!”

 Aside from recording the team’s first Top 15 finish of the young season, Mears was the third best finishing Ford, behind only race winner Carl Edwards, and Brad Keselowski, who finished 4th.  Mears’ 14th place Phoenix effort bumps Germain Racing to 20th in the Owner Point standings and moves him to 19th in Driver Points.

 The GEICO Racing team will next travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, where they will try their luck in the Entertainment Capital of the World.

 Before getting the race weekend underway, Germain Racing will take part in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series test on Thursday, March 7th, at the 1.5-mile paved oval.

 Mears and the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion will hit the track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the opening practice session on Friday, March 8th, at 3:00 PM (EST).  Qualifying will follow at 6:40 PM (EST).

 The Kobalt Tools 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, March 10th, and it will be televised live on FOX beginning at 3:00 PM (EST).  The Performance Racing Network (PRN) will carry the live radio broadcast.

Daytona 500 2013 - Race Recap

PERSEVERANCE PAYS DIVIDENDS FOR MEARS AND GEICO TEAM


Daytona Beach, FL (February 24, 2013) – After a successful week of practice and qualifying, Casey Mears and his GEICO team were anxious to get underway at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday afternoon.  While gray skies hovered and rain threatened the area, clear weather prevailed, allowing a full 500 miles of racing at the World Center of Racing.

The previous weekend saw Mears sit 17th in both practice sessions before qualifying 15th.  Mears’ #13 GEICO Ford Fusion was strong, as evidenced by his effort during Thursday’s Budweiser Duel number one, where he ran in second place for the bulk of the race before finishing eighth.

The Germain Racing team looked to pick up where they left off when the green flag set the 55th Daytona 500 underway on Sunday afternoon.  Starting 17th, Mears vacillated back and forth in the draft before the event’s first caution flag was displayed on lap 27 for debris on the backstretch.  Sitting in the 22nd position, he brought his GEICO Fusion to the attention of the Germain Racing pit crew.  They quickly refreshed him with tires and fuel before returning him to the racing surface two positions to the good, in 20th place.

Unfortunately, lap 33 of 200 changed the trajectory of Mears’ day when Kasey Kahne abruptly got sideways in front of the field.  While Mears did a masterful job of avoiding the incident, Tony Stewart would later make an unexpected turn into the #13 car, causing heavy damage to the front of Mears’ GEICO Fusion.  Juan Pablo Montoya, Kevin Harvick and Jamie McMurray were also collected in the crash.  While NASCAR’s elite headed for their garage stalls, the crew of Germain Racing went to work on Mears’ car on pit road.  Armed with a sawsall and bear bond, the GEICO pit crew quickly made extensive repairs to the front end of his Ford Fusion.  They ultimately returned Mears to the race just ten laps down, while others involved in the crash would take much longer to reappear.

Although Mears sat in the 37th position for much of the race, the Germain crew worked efficiently on pit road each time the GEICO Fusion made a visit, keeping him in optimum position to make up ground.  While Mears may have otherwise seemed doomed as he pedaled around the 2.5-mile superspeedway in a damaged racecar, he was instead turning fast, consistent laps that were competitive with the leaders.

When the checkered flag brought the 500-mile event to a close, Mears and his GEICO team managed to overcome a major setback early to pick up eight positions and salvage a 29th place finish.

“We had a good, consistent week leading up to the 500, so it’s hard to be too upset because these things happen at Daytona and Talladega,” Mears said after the race.  “What we focus on is how we respond to the situation and in this case we kept digging and working hard, and because of our effort, we were able to pick up eight spots, which is huge at the beginning of the season.  I’m really proud of the guys and their perseverance today.”  He added, “It was a great week and I’m appreciative of GEICO and Bob Germain’s commitment to the team in making sure we run the full season in 2013 and 2014.  It’s all positive as we head to Phoenix next week.”

Mears and his GEICO team pack it up and head west next week where they will spend the next three of four races on the west coast; Phoenix, Las Vegas, Bristol and Fontana compose their month of March.

Mears and the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion will hit the track at Phoenix International Raceway for the opening practice session on Friday, March 1st, at 2:00 PM (EST).  Qualifying will follow at 6:10 PM (EST).

Duels Race Report - Consistency Key for GEICO Ford

CONSISTENCY FAVORS MEARS AND GEICO TEAM IN DAYTONA

 

Daytona Beach, FL (February 21, 2013) – The Germain Racing team spent the off-season focused on preparing for the Daytona 500.  If there was any doubt if their time spent away from family and friends was invested wisely, the last few days should have answered that question.  The GEICO team and driver Casey Mears arrived at Daytona International Speedway poised for success, and the work committed over the winter months quickly manifested itself when practice got underway.

 

Mears was 17th on the speed charts in both sessions on Saturday, February 16th, before he picked up speed in Sunday’s time trials where he navigated the 2.5-mile superspeedway in just 46.037 seconds, at a rate of speed of 195.495 miles per hour.  His effort landed him on the outside of row four, in the eighth position, for the Budweiser Duel 150’s.  Mears and his #13 GEICO Ford Fusion would take part in Duel 1.

 

Before the Duels got underway on Thursday, the Germain Racing team would receive a bit of good news when GEICO announced they would sponsor the team for the full season in both 2013 and 2014.  Reeling from an adrenaline bump, the GEICO team hurriedly made their way to the starting grid where their driver was soon to do battle to determine if the GEICO Fusion would secure a spot in Sunday’s Daytona 500.

 

When the green flag turned the field loose for a short 60-laps of racing action, Mears quickly made his way to the front and sat in the third position by the second lap.  He moved the #13 GEICO Fusion into second on lap five and did not depart the position until 34 laps later.  Mears would require only a single fuel stop to complete the event.  After surrendering third place to visit pit road on lap 41, the Germain Racing pit crew quickly returned the GEICO Fusion to the racing surface one spot to the good, in the second position.

 

With just eight laps to go, Mears was riding in fifth when his rear view mirror filled with the image of Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards in an incident that resulted in a hard crash for the latter.  Mears and his GEICO Fusion would restart in the 7th position with just four laps remaining in the race.  When the checkered flag halted the field, Mears had hustled to an eighth place finish in his first event of the 2013 season.  When the final Daytona 500 starting grid was set after Duel 2, Mears was slated to roll off from the 17th position come Sunday afternoon. 

 

“It’s been a real consistent week for our team and we’re going to have a fast car for the Daytona 500 on Sunday,” Mears said.  “We started our day off with great news from the folks at GEICO that they’re on-board fulltime for 2013 and 2014, and there’s not much of a better way to start off a season.  I’m so appreciative of their commitment and the commitment of our team owner, Bob Germain, and it makes me proud to be associated with these guys.  I’m really happy for all of the guys on this GEICO team who have worked so hard in the off-season; it’s great to see them rewarded for their efforts.  Sunday will be fun.”

 

The Daytona 500 is on Sunday, February 24th, and it will be televised live on FOX beginning at 1:00 PM (EST).  The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will carry the live radio broadcast.

Testing Report - GEICO Racing

MEARS AND THE GEICO TEAM OFF TO FAST START IN 2013

Team shows up 10th and 3rd on speed charts at Daytona and Charlotte tests

 

Mooresville, NC (January 21, 2013) – Time flies, but the Germain Racing team maximized each moment that’s passed since departing Homestead in November.  Casey Mears and his GEICO team took few days off in the off-season and instead committed themselves to being prepared for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.  No sooner than the team arrived home from last season’s finale, they found themselves working feverishly to build new racecars, as the 2013 season will see a new bodystyle enter NASCAR.  The new #13 GEICO Ford Fusion will look more similar to the Ford Fusion found at local dealerships, bringing about excitement with fans and teams alike.

 

A single car team with just 30 employees, Germain Racing’s hard work and diligence paid dividends.  When the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series took to Charlotte Motor Speedway for a preliminary test in December, Mears and his GEICO team were one of the only organizations to arrive at the track with a fully built, steel-bodied racecar.  In January, the team was expected to be challenged by back-to-back tests at Daytona and Charlotte, but the speed charts indicated otherwise.  Daytona’s 2.5-mile superspeedway saw Mears and his #13 GEICO Ford Fusion in the top ten before Charlotte’s 1.5-mile quad-oval found them third when the off-season’s final test concluded.

 

Most notably, Germain Racing is quickly becoming a destination point for NASCAR talent.  Even the Sprint Cup Series’ top teams experience employee turnover in the off-season, but Germain was immune to it.  Instead, they added team members, including a shop foreman and mechanic.  They also retained their pit crew and have a pit crew coach and consultant on staff.

 

The team’s continuity, combined with the wisdom of veteran driver Casey Mears and its six-year relationship with GEICO, has been the greatest cause of its success and bright prospects.  Both GEICO and Mears are signed on through the end of 2014, providing a level of stability that will allow Germain to experience continued growth.

 

Mears was pleased with the progress made in the off-season, as well as at the 2013 tests.

 

“We have a great team and the guys have passion about what they do in the shop each day and their hard work has paid off,” Mears said.  “It was fun to go to the front at the Daytona test, and encouraging to make changes, work hard and keep digging to end up third at the Charlotte test.  We’re happy to continue with Ford and have the Roush Yates horsepower again this season.”  He continued, “I can’t thank GEICO and Bob Germain (team owner) enough for the support and commitment they have given our program.  Our program shows that you don’t have to be the biggest team; you just have to work harder than everyone else.  Our team has strength of character and remains focused on the process, which are two of the biggest reasons for our success.”

 

Mears and his GEICO team now turn their attention to the Daytona 500 and the opening 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice session on Saturday, February 16th.  A seasoned restrictor plate racer, Mears has led laps in the GEICO car at both Daytona and Talladega, causing hope and excitement heading into February’s season opener.

MEARS AND GECKO MAKE AGGRESSIVE DECISIONS AT HOMESTEAD

Off-season a luxury; Germain Racing to test at least three times in next two months

 

Homestead, FL (November 18, 2012) – Three strong weeks preceded Germain Racing’s visit to south Florida for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season finale.  After a few tough weeks, the GEICO team’s resilience prevailed when they righted the ship in Martinsville and entered Homestead with three consecutive Top 25 finishes.

 

Casey Mears got out of the gate quick on Friday when he landed 20th on the speed chart before heading into qualifying later Friday evening.  He turned a lap of 31.385 seconds, at a rate of speed of 172.057 miles per hour, and would start from the 28th position when the Ford EcoBoost 400 got underway on Sunday afternoon.

 

When the green flag set the field underway for the final time of the 2012 season, Mears quickly jumped two positions to 26th on the opening lap.  Although he reported a tight condition on just the second lap, Mears was able to move the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion into the top 25 on lap six.  Unfortunately, lap 17 saw the GEICO Fusion take a turn for the worse and Mears indicated to crew chief Bootie Barker: “The front end is terrible.”  He dropped as low as 30th before a handful of pit stops had the GEICO crew making adjustments that later saw Mears chasing a top 20 finish as the race began to wind down.

 

Several times, Barker noted that the #13 GEICO Fusion was recording top 10 lap times.  Mears continued to throttle forward until an empty fuel tank sent him scrambling for pit road with just five laps left in the event.  The team gambled late and it very nearly paid off.  With Homestead being the last race of the season, the GEICO team saw no reason to hold back and not take every opportunity to score another strong finish.  After being refreshed with a tank of fuel, Mears and the GEICO Fusion returned to the racing surface for the final few laps and were relegated to a 29th place finish. 

 

“It was certainly not the finish we were looking for, but you take chances and sometimes they pay off and sometimes they don’t.  This was the last race of the year, so we were taking every opportunity we could to get up front,” Mears said.  “The 29th place finish doesn’t take away from our effort today, or the results we’ve had over the course of the season.  We put together a nice year after making the switch to Ford in December/January.  We have a tremendous sponsor in GEICO and their support, along with Bob Germain’s commitment, have allowed us to achieve desired results this season.  The heart and character of the people on our team are immeasurable; we’re in a good place heading into 2013.”

 

While the 2012 season concluded today, the 2013 season starts on Monday.  Team fabricators are scurrying around the shop already constructing the new 2013 GEICO Ford Fusion.  While other sports enjoy the benefits of an off-season, NASCAR teams instead hit the racetrack for at least three tests over the next two months.  The first test will come in mid-December when Mears and his GEICO team take to Charlotte Motor Speedway before visiting Daytona for the second test on January 10th.  A third test will take place back at Charlotte Motor Speedway in late January.

Phoenix Race Report - Casey Mears, GEICO Ford Fusion

MEARS ESCAPES WILD PHOENIX RACE WITH 22ND PLACE FINISH

 

 

 

Avondale, AZ (November 11, 2012) – Casey Mears and the GEICO team descended upon the Phoenix area looking to extend the momentum they gained over the previous two weeks at Martinsville and Texas.  With the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season rapidly coming to a close, Phoenix offered an opportunity to continue finishing the year in strong fashion.

 

Mears opened the weekend by ending up 26th on the speed chart in the series’ first practice session on Friday.  He would then move on to qualifying where he toured the newly paved and configured one-mile oval in 26.625-seconds, a strong lap considering the bright sunshine that blanketed the racetrack.  Mere moments after the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion departed the racing surface, clouds rolled in and the temperature cooled, allowing subsequent drivers to break track qualifying records.  Mears would start from the 25th position, just one spot to the rear of close friend, Jimmie Johnson.

 

A sold out crowd at Phoenix International Raceway showed up to celebrate Veteran’s Day with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.  Mears and the #13 GEICO Fusion rolled off from the 25th position when the green flag turned the field loose for 312 laps of racing on Sunday afternoon.  Immediately faced with a handling issue, Mears radioed in on lap three to crew chief, Bootie Barker, “I’m totally sideways, I have no side grip.”  Barker assured him they would rectify the problem once he was able to visit pit road for a scheduled green flag stop.  They received the opportunity sooner than later, as the event’s first caution flag flew on lap 16.

 

Mears would ultimately re-enter the top 25 and depart only briefly during a late-race strategy move that sent the #13 GEICO Fusion down pit road under green on lap 247.  Mears’ car continued to get better throughout the race and as the insanity began in Phoenix, he managed to keep his GEICO Fusion clean in the closing laps.  The race was red flagged with just two laps to go while a melee ensued in the garage between the teams of Hendrick Motorsports and Michael Waltrip Racing after a case of road rage prevailed between drivers Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer.  When the event went back to green flag conditions, Mears hustled to a 22nd place finish while also avoiding a last lap crash that collected a handful of his Sprint Cup Series counterparts.  When he took the checkered flag, Mears also achieved the team’s 18th top 25 finish of the 2012 season.

 

“It was definitely an interesting day, especially there at the end when things got a little crazy.  I’m proud of our GEICO crew because we took a day that could have otherwise turned out as a challenge and made it a solid effort,” Mears said.  “These guys kept working hard to make the GEICO Fusion better and the car ultimately came around, allowing me to make up ground.  We’re looking forward to having a productive weekend in Homestead as we end the 2012 season.”

 

Next weekend, Casey Mears and the Germain Racing team will find themselves in south Florida where they will wrap up the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

 

Mears and the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion will hit the track at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the opening practice session on Friday, November 16th, at 1:30 PM (EST).  Qualifying will follow at 6:10 PM (EST).

GEICO Racing - Texas Race Recap

MEARS AND THE GECKO NET 21ST IN TEXAS COMEBACK

Fort Worth, TX (November 4, 2012) – After a few tough weeks at the racetrack, the Germain Racing team and driver Casey Mears rebounded with a solid effort in Martinsville last week.  They hoped to continue the momentum when they arrived in the Lone Star State for this week’s race, a 500-mile event that would challenge even the best, well-funded NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams.

 

When the team unloaded the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion for the weekend’s first practice on Friday, the car reacted negatively and sent the engineers scrambling.  However, by session’s end, crew chief Bootie Barker and his staff made changes that saw Mears head north on the speed chart, where he ended up 19th.  Qualifying got underway at Texas Motor Speedway late Friday afternoon and Mears wheeled the #13 GEICO Fusion around the 1.5-mile quad-oval in just 28.672-seconds, landing him 20th on Sunday’s starting grid.

 

With a late start time of 2 PM (CST) on Sunday, each team would be faced with the changing attitude of their racecars, as the sun was sure to set prior to the conclusion of the race.  Starting from 20th, Mears lost ground when the green flag waved and fell as low as 26th while being challenged by a tight condition.  Although he found the car tough to handle, that didn’t deter Mears from driving the #13 GEICO Fusion to the front of the field, where he entered the top ten before being forced down pit road for a scheduled green flag pitstop on lap 46.  After being outfitted with four fresh Goodyear Racing tires and a full tank of Sunoco racing fuel, he rejoined the field and continued to battle his racecar until the long green flag run dictated Mears make a second scheduled green flag stop on Lap 91.  This stop would prove fruitful, as Mears reported just two laps later that the car was turning better than it did during the previous run.

 

The on-track action heated up a bit for Mears when he narrowly avoided a spinning AJ Allmendinger on lap 108.  The #13 GEICO Fusion sustained grill damage from the incident, but the Germain Racing pit crew quickly got it taped up and repaired while under caution.  The race went back under green on lap 118, but not for long.  Bobby Labonte lost an engine on the restart and forced a chain reaction crash that saw the #13 GEICO Fusion fall victim to damage to the rear left-side of the racecar.  Mears made two visits to pit road under caution for repairs and his crew returned him to the racing surface without losing a lap.  Barker assured his driver that the damage was inconsequential and would not affect Mears when the race returned to green.

 

As the race began to wind down, the Germain Racing team used strategy in an attempt to rejoin the lead lap.  With just eight laps to go, Mears and the #13 GEICO Fusion had raced their way into the Lucky Dog position and sat in 25th place.  Barker’s strategy would pay off a brief three laps later when Mark Martin brought out the event’s final caution flag with five laps remaining, returning Mears to the lead lap.  While he restarted from the 24th position with two to go, Mears managed to pass three cars on the final lap to record a 21st place, lead lap finish when the checkered flag halted 502-miles of racing. Mears effort accounts for the team’s 17th top 25 finish of the 2012 season.

 

“Not a bad night, especially with the repairs we had to make after that restart incident, but the guys on our GEICO crew did a great job all night and it showed in the end,” Mears said.  “These guys never quit and it’s great when you’re in the trenches with people who keep fighting and absolutely refuse to quit.  We kept working our strategy and in the end we were on the lead lap and almost got another top 20.  Our team is special and the character and heart of everyone shows each week.  I’m grateful for the support of everyone at GEICO, Germain Racing and Ford, and I’m glad we could fight back tonight and get another top 25.”  He continued, “We’ve had two solid weekends and I’m hoping we can continue the momentum and end the season strong.”

 

Next weekend, the Germain Racing team will head west for the final time this year to Phoenix, Arizona, for race number 35 of the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

Texas Race Report - GEICO Ford Fusion

MEARS AND THE GECKO NET 21ST IN TEXAS COMEBACK

 

Fort Worth, TX (November 4, 2012) – After a few tough weeks at the racetrack, the Germain Racing team and driver Casey Mears rebounded with a solid effort in Martinsville last week.  They hoped to continue the momentum when they arrived in the Lone Star State for this week’s race, a 500-mile event that would challenge even the best, well-funded NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams.

 

When the team unloaded the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion for the weekend’s first practice on Friday, the car reacted negatively and sent the engineers scrambling.  However, by session’s end, crew chief Bootie Barker and his staff made changes that saw Mears head north on the speed chart, where he ended up 19th.  Qualifying got underway at Texas Motor Speedway late Friday afternoon and Mears wheeled the #13 GEICO Fusion around the 1.5-mile quad-oval in just 28.672-seconds, landing him 20th on Sunday’s starting grid.

 

With a late start time of 2 PM (CST) on Sunday, each team would be faced with the changing attitude of their racecars, as the sun was sure to set prior to the conclusion of the race.  Starting from 20th, Mears lost ground when the green flag waved and fell as low as 26th while being challenged by a tight condition.  Although he found the car tough to handle, that didn’t deter Mears from driving the #13 GEICO Fusion to the front of the field, where he entered the top ten before being forced down pit road for a scheduled green flag pitstop on lap 46.  After being outfitted with four fresh Goodyear Racing tires and a full tank of Sunoco racing fuel, he rejoined the field and continued to battle his racecar until the long green flag run dictated Mears make a second scheduled green flag stop on Lap 91.  This stop would prove fruitful, as Mears reported just two laps later that the car was turning better than it did during the previous run.

Martinsville Race Recap - GEICO Ford Fusion

CASEY MEARS AND GEICO TEAM BACK ON TRACK WITH TOP 25 AT MARTINSVILLE

 

 

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (October 28, 2012) – Martinsville Speedway is known for some of the best short-track racing on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit. Tempers flare and patience is crucial in order to have a good finish at the end of 500 laps at the “paperclip.” With only four races remaining in the 2012 season, the stakes for every team were that much higher.

 

Casey Mears and Germain Racing set high hopes entering the weekend, as the GEICO team had endured a tough few weeks. Team morale was lifted quickly during Friday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying session when Mears clocked a lap of 19.586 seconds (96.681 mph) to place the No. 13 GEICO Ford Fusion 22nd on the starting grid. His effort accounted for the team’s best starting position at the ½-mile racetrack since Mears’ arrival in the car in late 2010.

 

With overcast skies and cool temperatures, Mears consistently ran inside the top-25, on the lead lap, for the bulk of the race. Throughout the first half of the race, the California native reported a tight handling condition. When a caution flag was displayed on lap 151 for a spin in turn four, crew chief Bootie Barker brought Mears and his No. 13 GEICO Fusion to pit road for four tires, fuel, wedge and spring rubber adjustments, putting the Ford in 27th for the lap 156 restart.

 

Three quick cautions slowed the pace from lap 200 – 235, but the GEICO team capitalized on every opportunity that was presented to help improve the handling on the No. 13 Ford Fusion. A long green-flag run, spanning over 160 laps, forced Mears to come to the attention of his pit crew for multiple scheduled green flag pit stops. Despite the caution-free period, Mears continued to work his way through the field and by lap 400, the No. 13 Fusion was scored in 23rd-place.

 

While the on-track action picked up as the laps counted down, Mears kept all the fenders on his GEICO Ford during three late-race cautions to bring home a 25th-place finish. This is the driver’s 16th top-25 effort of the 2012 season.

 

“We had a good, solid day and it’s what we needed to get everything headed in the right direction as the season winds down,” Mears said. “Bootie (Barker, crew chief) and the GEICO crew did a nice job today of making adjustments and using strategy to keep us competitive. We’re looking forward to getting the GEICO Fusion on-track in Texas.  I’m also looking forward to visiting with GEICO associates at the GEICO regional office in Dallas this week. It’s always great to see the people who support you face-to-face. GEICO has been very supportive of our team, so it’s nice to be able to thank them in person.”

 

Next week, Mears and his Germain Racing team will return to racing action at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, November 4. The 34th race of 2012 will air live on ESPN beginning at 2 p.m. ET. Performance Racing Network and Sirius-XM Satellite Radio (NASCAR channel 90) will also carry the live radio broadcast.

Kansas Race Recap - GEICO Fusion

MEARS’ FAST RACECAR STIFLED BY TIRE ISSUE IN KANSAS

 

Kansas City, KS (October 21, 2012) – While a last second deal from GEICO sent the Germain Racing team scrambling to get to Kansas for the test on Wednesday and Thursday, any indication the team was ill-prepared was non-existent.  The team arrived safely in Kansas on Wednesday morning looking to take full advantage of a two-day test permitted by NASCAR in the interest of better acquainting Sprint Cup Series drivers with the recently resurfaced Kansas Speedway.

 

Rain prevailed for the better part of the day on Wednesday, but once the track was dry and skies cleared, the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion made its way quickly around the newly paved 1.5-mile tri-oval.  Mears is a quick learner as evidenced by his speed in the opening test session where he sat 18th on the speed chart when the rain-shortened session came to a close.  Thursday took a slightly different turn when the GEICO Fusion twice let go of oil on the racetrack, cutting short an otherwise productive test day.

 

When the official race weekend got underway, Mears qualified 28th on Friday afternoon when he wheeled around the racetrack at a record shattering speed of 188.600 miles per hour.  Mears’ rollercoaster ride continued when he sat 20th on the board after the second practice was complete on Saturday, only to have the #13 GEICO Fusion find the outside wall in final practice after drastic weather changes altered the attitude of the racecar.  The Germain Racing crew worked feverishly to repair the damaged right side of the #13 Fusion and get it race-ready for the impending Hollywood Casino 400 scheduled for Sunday afternoon.  Crew chief Bootie Barker and his GEICO crew performed masterful work and the Gecko sat ready to roll on a bright Sunday morning.

 

Race day was met with bright sunshine and perfect temperatures, but as the green flag approached, skies turned gray and the Kansas City area began to cool.  Mears rolled off from the 28th position when the field was turned loose for 400-miles of racing.  He began moving the #13 GEICO Ford Fusion forward and jumped to 26th before the close of the opening lap.  While running lap times consistent with cars in the top ten, a right front tire sent Mears careening hard into the outside wall between turns three and four on lap 31, bringing out the first of a record setting 14 cautions at Kansas Speedway on Sunday.  The GEICO Fusion was forced behind the wall for repairs, but after intensive work by the Germain Racing crew it was determined the car would not be able to maintain minimum speed should it return to the racetrack.

 

While Mears would be the first to have a right front tire give way, he certainly was not the last, as several drivers found themselves either spinning or making contact with the outside wall due to tire issues.  The Germain Racing team was dealt a 37th place finish in a race where only 27 cars were left on the track when the checkered flag waved in front of a packed house.

 

“This obviously would’ve been a good day to not have any issues since only 27 cars finished the race because it was an opportunity for us to get a great finish,” Mears said.  “But, it didn’t happen that way and we will put it behind us immediately and get focused on Martinsville and finishing our season in strong fashion for GEICO and everyone in the Germain organization.”  He later made light of the ever-present tire issue and said, “We have them all beat; we did it first!”  Mears continued by adding, “On days like this it’s hard to be mad because we can’t control flat tires.  The team worked as hard as they could to get the car ready for the race and we were going to be there at the end.  I’m so proud of everyone on this Germain team for their commitment and refusal to quit.  We’ll keep digging and make something great happen.”

 

Next weekend, the Germain Racing team will travel just up the road to Martinsville, Virginia, for some electrifying short-track action.
