PERSISTENT MEARS BOUNCES GEICO BACK INTO THE TOP 35

Fort Worth, TX (April 9, 2011) – After a heartbreaking week in Martinsville, Casey Mears and the GEICO team eagerly anticipated their weekend in Texas.  A week ago, Mears drove the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry to the front of the field before a tire issue, followed by a transmission problem, dashed the hopes of the Germain Racing team.   

In the interest of moving forward, Mears climbed into the #13 GEICO Camry in Texas on Thursday for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ opening practice session and promptly took control of the ‘go or go home’ field.  The Gecko sat 28th on the speed chart and was the fastest ‘go or go home’ car, giving the GEICO team hope as they prepared for Friday’s qualifying session.

Mears would not fail to impress and would navigate the 1.5-mile quad-oval of Texas Motor Speedway in just 28.933 seconds, at a rate of speed of 186.638 miles per hour.  Mears’ effort landed the #13 GEICO Camry 22nd on Saturday’s Samsung Mobile 500 starting grid.

Amid heavy winds and 80-degree temperatures, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series field took the green flag for 334 laps of racing.  Rolling off the starting grid from the 22nd position, Mears fell backwards as he began to immediately battle a loose condition. 

Mears would free-fall to 31st before the event’s first caution flag of the day was displayed on Lap 9.  After bringing the #13 GEICO Camry down pit road for four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment, Mears started to head north on the scoring chart.  By Lap 57, he was riding in 26th and on the rear bumpers of Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne.  Eight laps later, Mears would pilot the #13 GEICO Camry around Kahne and Brian Vickers and move into the 24th position.

Following a scheduled green flag pit stop on Lap 95, Mears began to report a loose condition in the #13 GEICO Camry.  Casey radioed to crew chief Bootie Barker: “I’m way loose.  I’m sideways out here.  The back end is terrible.”  Barker assured his driver that the necessary adjustments would be made during the next pit stop.

The caution Mears so badly needed came out on Lap 113 when Ken Schrader cut down a tire.  Running in the 30th position, Mears brought his #13 GEICO Camry to the attention of his Germain Racing pit crew, who outfitted Mears with four fresh tires, a full tank of fuel and adjustments.  

Mears had moved into 29th when he found himself narrowly avoiding peril when a Lap 215 crash involving Martin Truex, Jr., Mark Martin and Regan Smith occurred just in front of the #13 GEICO Camry.  Mears carefully maneuvered through the carnage and began his march to the Top 25. 

When the checkered flag waved under a Texas night sky, Mears had hustled to a 26th place finish.  His effort returned GEICO and the Germain Racing team to the Top 35, ensuring they will be in the field next week in Talladega.

“Of course we want to be better, but we were able to work hard tonight, get a 26th place finish and get back in the Top 35,” Mears said after climbing from his #13 GEICO Camry.  “It certainly makes a difference when you can show up each week and be guaranteed a starting spot, so obviously our top priority is being in the Top 35 and we were able to make that happen tonight.  The crew worked hard during our pit stops and we were able to be persistent and achieve our goal.”

While Mears’ weekend ended on a good note, getting back in the Top 35 was not the only exciting thing that happened.  Mears’ new GEICO commercial began airing this weekend.  The commercial features the GEICO driver as a ‘golfer’ and he appears to be ‘driving’ a golf ball during the spot. 

Mears and the GEICO team will next travel to Talladega, Alabama, for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ second restrictor-plate race of the 2011 season.

Mears and the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry will hit the 2.66-mile tri-oval of Talladega Superspeedway for the opening practice session at 2:00 PM (EDT) on Friday, April 15th.  Qualifying will follow on Saturday, April 16th at 11:35 AM (EDT).

The Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, April 17th and it will be televised live on FOX beginning at 1:00 PM (EDT).  The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will carry the live radio broadcast.

Mears’ Top-20 Run Plagued by Tire and Transmission Issues at Martinsville

Drivers love and love to hate short tracks. Early in his career, Casey Mears enjoyed racing on the intermediate circuits more than the short ones but as the years progressed, those less than a mile in length have provided numerous highlights for the veteran driver. Entering Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Mears looked to insert another positive run in the history books.

 

For the first 296 laps, all went as planned for the GEICO Racing team as Mears successfully competed inside the top-25. Then, one short lap later, the bad luck struck the No. 13 Toyota Camry as Mears’ right-front tire blew forcing the team to pit under green and lose four laps to the leader. Misfortune plagued Mears once again with less than 150 laps until the checkered flag, when the transmission blew. Once changed in the garage area, the Gecko returned to the track and brought home a 36th-place finish at the .526-mile paperclip-shaped oval.

 

“It was a frustrating day,” said Mears. “Every time myself, (crew chief) Bootie (Barker), and the guys get the No. 13 GEICO Toyota Camry handling well and in position to have a solid finish, something happens. First, we had the bead melt on the tire and then fourth gear blew out of the transmission. Bad luck seems to be following us but we will just keep moving forward, try to fix the issues, and head to Texas.”

 

Mears qualified his GEICO Racing Toyota Camry in the 30th position on Saturday afternoon, as the Germain Racing team was locked in the top-35 in owner point standings for the first time this season. As soon as the green flag waved on Sunday, Mears didn’t waste any time before making moves through the field. In the first 50 laps of green flag competition, Mears picked up 12 positions to 18th-place.

 

Solid pit stops by the GEICO crew, paired with Mears’ patience behind the wheel, set the stage for a top-20 finish as the race passed the halfway mark. On lap 297, Mears radioed to his team that his right-front tire had blew. The field stayed under green flag conditions while Mears brought his car to pit road, putting the team four laps down and running in 28th-place.

 

As Mears was clocking laps to complete the race and gain as many points as possible, the transmission blew on lap 359, causing the GEICO Toyota to come to the garage for repairs. In a short 37 laps, the team rapidly changed the transmission and had Mears back on the track for the final 100 circuits. Despite the Camry handling decent in final stretch, Mears crossed the finish line in the 36th position, completing 457 of 500 laps.

 

With the sixth of 36 races complete, Mears dropped two positions to 37th-place in the owner championship standings. He currently sits two points behind the locked-in top-35 marker.

 

Next Saturday, April 9, the Sprint Cup Series will head to Texas Motor Speedway for the Samsung Mobile 500 in Fort Worth. The race starts at 7:30 p.m. ET with live coverage on FOX.

MEARS’ FONTANA FINISH LOCKS GEICO IN THE TOP 35


Fontana, CA (March 27, 2011) – Casey Mears and the GEICO Racing team arrived in Southern California with Top 35 visions in their minds.  For the first time in the three-year history of the GEICO NASCAR Sprint Cup Series program, both GEICO and Germain Racing have ventured into unchartered territory where they now find themselves sitting in the Top 35 in the Owner Point standings.  Top 35 status guarantees the Germain Racing team a position in each race, providing they maintain their position. 

They would need to record a decent finish in Fontana to maintain their current status and allow the GEICO team to be locked in at Martinsville next week. 

Friday’s opening practice session in Fontana proved unspectacular, as Mears and the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry sat 37th at the close of practice.  Undaunted, Mears took to the two-mile oval for qualifying on Friday afternoon and turned heads when he paced the two-mile facility in just 39.592-seconds, at a rate of speed of 181.855 miles per hour.  Aside from securing the 25th starting position in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, Mears was the fastest ‘go or go home car’ in the qualifying session. 

Mears then tore into Fontana for final practice on Saturday and shot the #13 GEICO Camry to the top of the chart and sat 19th when the session concluded. 

Rain threatened the Fontana area on Sunday morning and drizzle plagued the area until around 10:00 AM (PT) when it finally dissipated and allowed for track drying to begin.  The racing gods would smile upon Southern California and allow for an on-time green flag at 12:16 PM (PT). 

Mears started 25th, but quickly began to battle the racecar.  By Lap 3, Mears had dropped to 27th and reported to crew chief Bootie Barker that his GEICO Camry was tight and would not turn.  He fell as low as 35th before scheduled green flag pit stops got underway and forced the #13 GEICO Camry down pit road for service on Lap 34.  The Germain Racing pit crew quickly outfitted Mears with four fresh tires, a full tank of fuel and adjustments before returning him to the racing surface in the 32nd position. 

The adjustments would serve as little assistance to Mears, as just two laps later he once again radioed to Barker: “The front end just doesn’t want to work.”

Mears and Barker would win the occasional battle, but the war continued and Lap 163 found Mears still at odds with an ill-handling racecar while running in the 30th position.  As the laps wound down, Barker ordered Mears to pit road for the final pit stop of the day on Lap 185 after a caution came out for a Bobby Labonte crash.  Barker instructed the GEICO pit crew to make the necessary adjustments to give Mears and the #13 GEICO Camry a shot at a better finish.

Barker’s orders did not go unheeded and Mears restarted P32 with just nine laps remaining in the 200-lap race.  Mears and the #13 GEICO Camry made quick work of the cars of David Gilliland and Trevor Bayne in the final laps en route to a 29th place finish under gray skies and cool temperatures. 

Shortly after the checkered flag waved, Barker announced to the GEICO team that they were in the Top 35 in the 2011 Owner Standings, which means they will be locked into the race next week in Martinsville.  Barker also noted that this is the first time in GEICO’s three-year Sprint Cup Series involvement that the team would officially be ‘locked in’, a big stride for a team that three years ago did not even have a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team. 

“Today was frustrating, but we kept fighting and salvaged a decent finish,” Mears said after climbing from his #13 GEICO Camry.  “The nice thing is that we were able to give GEICO the opportunity to be locked into the race next week because we have worked really hard this year and put ourselves in the Top 35.  I am proud of all of these guys on this GEICO team because regardless of what happens we keep our heads and stay focused.”

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will go short-track racing for the second time in three weeks when they travel to Martinsville, VA, next weekend.

Mears and the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry will hit the half-mile paper-clipped shaped oval for the opening practice session at 12:30 PM (EDT) on Friday, April 1st.  Qualifying will follow on Saturday, April 2nd, at 12:10 PM (EDT).

Tough Luck Strikes Casey Mears at Bristol Motor Speedway

Mechanical Failure Relegates GEICO Racing Team to 37th-Place Finish

 

 

BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 21, 2011) – Coming off the first off-weekend for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Casey Mears and the No. 13 GEICO Racing team were refreshed and ready to battle the bullring known as Bristol Motor Speedway – a short track known for bumping and banging. 

 

On Friday afternoon, after two solid practice sessions, Mears took to the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile” for his qualifying attempt. The car of Dave Blaney, who qualified prior to Mears, blew an oil pump, causing oil fluid to cover the track. Unfortunately, Mears’ laps were hindered by this situation, relegating the GEICO Toyota Camry to the 43rd starting position for Sunday’s 500-lap race.

 

The green flag flew on The Jeff Byrd 500 under sunshine in the Tennessee Mountains. Mears patiently began his trek to the front of the field, understanding that to finish well, you must first finish. The first caution of the afternoon slowed the pace on lap 29 for a multi-car accident on the frontstretch. Mears did a great job of avoiding the wreck and moved into the 34th position. The California native was instructed to stay out by crew chief Bootie Barker, allowing Mears to restart from 22nd-place.

 

A competition caution came on lap 52 for the teams to check tire wear on their Goodyear rubber as a right-side tire change was mandated on Saturday, prior to the final practice sessions. Barker brought Mears to the attention of his GEICO crew for four tires, fuel, and adjustments as the No. 13 Toyota needed more rear grip. Restarting on lap 57 from the 27th position, Mears allowed the laps to clock off during a long caution-free run.

 

Mears drove his way into the top-25 as the third yellow flew on lap 130. The adjustments made during the previous pit stop helped the GEICO Camry, so Mears brought his Toyota to the attention of his crew for four tires and fuel, with no changes to the handling.

 

Despite holding his spot inside the top-25, problems struck Mears on lap 158, when his Toyota would shut off in the corners. Mears successfully switched batteries while continuing to make laps, but the problem was persistent forcing the team to come to the garage for repairs. After changing batteries and working on the electrical interiors, Mears returned to the track, however the issue was not fixed. The GEICO crew then changed additional mechanical parts before solving the issue.

 

Mears returned to track on lap 229.  Unfortunately, the tough luck cost the Germain Racing team 72 laps and placed the No. 13 in the 38th position. The team was unable to make up any spots, due to the number of laps down, until lap 410 when problems forced Dennis Setzer out of the race. The GEICO Racing team never gave up and continued to log laps and work on their Camry. Mears clocked lap times just as fast as the leaders in the final 100 laps of the race, despite damage to his machine. The checkered flag flew with Mears and the GEICO team in 37th-place.

 

The tremendous effort shown by the entire GEICO team allowed Mears and the No. 13 Toyota to remain inside the top-35 in the Owner Point Championship Standings, one point to the good over 36th-place owner Tommy Baldwin. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will return to the West Coast, as the fifth race of the season at Auto Club Speedway in Southern California will take place on Sunday, March 27, 2011.

TOP 25 IN VEGAS: CONSISTENCY KEY FOR MEARS AND GEICO TEAM

Las Vegas, NV (March 6, 2011) – A week ago, Casey Mears and the GEICO Racing team departed Phoenix with a sense of achievement.  Aside of transforming a potentially disastrous day into an 18th place finish, they also bounced themselves into the Top 35 in the owner standings.  A spot inside the Top 35 will lock the team into races beginning with Martinsville, should they maintain their status. 

 

Las Vegas offered the opportunity to continue their effort to gain consistency and further solidify their Top 35 points position.

If one had watched the GEICO team in Phoenix last week, they would feel like Las Vegas was a mirror image of last week’s effort.  Upon arriving at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Friday for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ opening practice session, Mears and the Gecko once again out-hustled all other go or go home cars and sat well ahead of their next competitor on the speed chart. 

The opening practice would serve as indication of how both qualifying, as well as the final practice session would go.  In both, the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry sat atop the list of go or go home cars, leaving little doubt as to the ability of seasoned veteran, Mears, and his Germain Racing crew. 

Starting 27th on Sunday, amid cool temperatures and sunny skies, Mears immediately began to battle a loose condition in the #13 GEICO Camry.  Attempting to wheel his machine around the 1.5-mile tri-oval with very little rear grip, Mears quickly expressed his concerns to crew chief Bootie Barker. 

By Lap 55, Mears had hustled up to the 23rd position when a scheduled green flag pit stop sent the #13 GEICO Camry down pit road for service.  Aside from saddling Mears with four tires and fuel, the GEICO pit crew would also make a track bar adjustment in hopes of providing Mears with the necessary rear grip.

While the adjustments would make a difference initially, the racecar would fall off quickly.  However, despite the lack of rear grip, Mears would be faster than the leader on Laps 69 and 70. 

As the race began to wind down, the GEICO pit crew would continue tending to the car and making adjustments.  In the end, the pit crew’s efforts, along with Mears’ skill and patience, would allow them to reap the rewards of their hard work and persistence.  When the checkered flag waved over the Entertainment Capital of the World, Mears and the GEICO Racing team notched their second consecutive Top 25 finish.  More significantly, they maintained their position in the Top 35 in the owner standings.

“Sure, it was a tough day, but once again this GEICO team never gave up.  We all remained calm and just kept working hard trying to get the car right and get a decent finish,” Mears said.  “We could’ve very easily quit and just took a 35th place finish, but that’s not in us.  We have such a great group of guys and our sponsor GEICO offers unwavering support.”  He continued, “We’re in the Top 35 and we didn’t even race in Daytona; that’s something to be proud of.  We will enjoy a week off and then get to Bristol and look for another good finish.”

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series takes its first break of the 2011 season next week and the Germain Racing team will garner some much-needed rest.  A week of rest only seems appropriate prior to racing at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Mears and the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry will hit the World’s Fastest Half-Mile for the opening practice session at 12:00 PM (EST) on Friday, March 18th. Qualifying will follow at 3:40 PM (EST).

The Jeff Byrd 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, March 20th, and it will be televised live on FOX beginning at 1:00 PM (EST).  The Performance Racing Network (PRN) will carry the live radio broadcast.

RESILIENT MEARS REBOUNDS IN PHOENIX

Avondale, AZ (February 27, 2011) – Ten days ago, Casey Mears was dealt one of the worst hands in his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing career when two motors broke in two days at Daytona, forcing him and the Germain Racing team to pack up the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry and head home.  While sitting on his couch watching the Daytona 500, Mears pondered long and hard the prospect of arriving in Phoenix to seek redemption.

 

Mears, whose wife, Trisha, played college basketball, saw Phoenix as a chance to rebound, but his performance in the first and second practices on Friday appeared more akin to a fast-break.  He quickly found himself among the fastest go or go home cars in both sessions, giving the GEICO team much needed hope heading into Saturday afternoon qualifying.

 

Qualifying would see more of the same out of the #13 GEICO Camry, as Mears worked his way around the one-mile tri-oval, out-hustling even Jimmie Johnson, to put the #13 GEICO Camry 27th on the starting grid for Sunday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500.  While Mears’ effort was the fastest among the go or go home cars, it more importantly exposed the resilience of both Mears and his Germain Racing team after experiencing heartbreak just a week ago in Daytona.

 

On Sunday, the green flag turned the field loose under sunny skies and cool temperatures.  Starting 27th, Mears and the #13 GEICO Camry made quick work of Matt Kenseth and Juan Pablo Montoya and promptly moved into the Top 25 by Lap 17. 

 

NASCAR informed the teams prior to the race that there would be a competition caution on Lap 40.  The green flag would not last that long, as debris would bring out the yellow flag for the first time on Lap 19.  Given that the teams were not allowed to refuel until the Lap 40 competition caution, crew chief Bootie Barker advised Mears not to visit pit road.  The result would be Mears and the #13 GEICO Camry restarting 7th on Lap 23.  Mears ran solidly in the 7th position for five laps before he fell victim to the fresh tires of cars behind him. 

 

He slid as low as 18th before the second caution of the afternoon was displayed on Lap 33 for a Robby Gordon spin.  Mears brought his #13 GEICO Camry down pit road to the attention of his Germain Racing pit crew for the first stop of the day.  After being outfitted with four fresh Goodyear tires and a tank of Sunoco racing fuel, Mears would sustain light fender damage while exiting pit road when a member of the #43 team inadvertently struck Mears’ car.  Consequently, Mears was forced to surrender 18th position and take another trip down pit road to have the fender pulled off of the tire.  Mears was relegated to restarting 38th on Lap 39, losing 20 positions due to the pit road incident. 

 

After narrowly avoiding two crashes earlier in the race, Mears soon found himself involved in one.  Mears and the #13 GEICO Camry restarted 19th on Lap 67, but before the field could complete a full sweep of the racetrack, a Talladega-like crash ensued, collecting thirteen cars, including that of Mears.  Mears radioed to Barker that the car was destroyed and that he was taking it to the garage, but Barker instructed him to limp the car down pit road so the pit crew could more properly assess the situation.  Upon seeing the heavy left side damage and right rear damage, the GEICO Racing pit crew promptly went to work.  Following a heavy investment of blood, sweat and Bear Bond tape, they returned Mears to the racing surface without causing him to lose a single lap. 

 

After restarting 18th on Lap 73, Mears settled the #13 GEICO Camry in for one of the longest green flag runs of the day.  He would dip in and out of the Top 20 through Lap 127 when David Ragan found himself crashing hard into the wall.  The caution flag provided Mears the opportunity to bring the GEICO Camry down pit road and let the Germain Racing pit crew continue to make repairs to the crash damage. 

 

Mears would travel down pit road for a scheduled green flag pit stop on Lap 255.  The GEICO crew supplied him with four fresh tires and a tank of fuel in a timely fashion, returning him to the track in the 23rd position.  Unfortunately, he would find himself two laps down.  Mears appeared undaunted and continued picking off cars one by one until he cracked the Top 20 on Lap 282. 

 

Mears had slipped to three laps down, but a caution flag provided a bit of relief on Lap 284.  Many cars had just visited pit road, which allowed Mears to recover one of the three.  Barker quickly radioed to Mears: “Because you were out there haulin’ butt, you actually made up a lap!”  Now the team was just a single lap down to the leaders and sitting in the 19th position as the race began to wind down. 

 

After going green for the final time on Lap 291, Mears would hustle through the final laps of the race and manage to record an 18th place finish.  Mears’ determination was evident, as he managed to track down and pass Montoya with just three laps to go. 

Despite sustaining heavy crash damage on Lap 67, Mears and the GEICO team displayed resilience and poise and delivered their first Top 20 finish of the season. 

 

“This is one of those races where we can think about what kind of finish we could’ve had if we didn’t get caught in that wreck, but these guys worked so hard today to keep this #13 GEICO Camry on the race track and it really paid off,” Mears said with a smile after emerging from the badly damaged GEICO Camry.  “This weekend says everything about this GEICO team.  We had a tough week in Daytona and everyone from GEICO’s corporate office down to the janitor at the race shop was heartbroken, but we came back this week and showed that Daytona was a fluke.  Today… this is who we are.”  He continued, “I can’t thank GEICO enough for their support over the last week and also for the Germain team for staying focused and giving us the opportunity to have a good weekend here in Phoenix.”

 

Next weekend, Mears and the GEICO Racing team will travel to Las Vegas for the series’ third stop on the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. 

 

Mears and the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry will hit the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval of Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the opening practice session at 3:00 PM (EST) on Friday, March 4th. Qualifying will follow at 6:40 PM (EST).

 

The Kobalt Tools 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, March 6th, and it will be televised live on FOX beginning at 3:00 PM (EST).  The Performance Racing Network (PRN) will carry the live radio broadcast.

Two Engine Failures Create a Disappointing Week for Casey Mears and GEICO Team

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 18, 2011) – Entering Daytona Beach, Florida, Casey Mears and the No. 13 GEICO Toyota team had high hopes of getting their 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season off to a quick start. Unfortunately, the stars weren’t lined up as two engine failures in two days created a very disappointing week for the GEICO Racing crew at Daytona International Speedway.

 

On Wednesday afternoon during final practice before the Gatorade Duels, the first engine expired on Mears, causing the driver to sit out the remaining practice time and the team to change engines in the No. 13 Camry.

 

The start of the second Duel on Thursday afternoon saw Mears starting from the rear of the field, because of the engine change on Wednesday. After three quick laps on the 2.5-mile legendary superspeedway, the second engine failure occurred, putting Mears and the GEICO team in the garage permanently and ending their hopes of making Sunday’s running of the Daytona 500.

 

“I don’t know, we didn’t even get a shot,” said Mears, after the second engine expired. “We’ll see, we have a good team and I know we are going to do good at some of the other races but you know the fact that we couldn’t run through practice on Wednesday and then run a few laps before the Duel didn’t help us. I don’t have to say what this feels like; obviously it feels terrible. But we will keep digging, look forward to next weekend and hopefully have a good day in Phoenix.”

 

Mears and the GEICO team will head to Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway next weekend, to attempt to make the second race of the 2011 season on February 27, 2011. Qualifying will take place on Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Eastern Time. Live coverage of the race can be seen on FOX, Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.

MEARS AND GEICO GETTING A JUMP ON 2011

Mooresville, NC (December 14, 2010) – While the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season wrapped up just three weeks ago in Homestead, the Germain Racing team has wasted no time in preparing for the 2011 season.  The front office staff is hard at work trying to secure additional funding to add to GEICO’s sponsorship of 18 of the 36 races, and crew chief Bootie Barker and the GEICO crew have been burning the midnight oil in the race shop.
 
After enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday, Casey Mears and Germain Racing are back at work and focused on the Daytona 500.  Mears and the GEICO team will be taking part in a tire test on December 15th and 16th at the newly resurfaced Daytona International Speedway; the first among NASCAR’s top series to test the new 2.5-mile superspeedway.
 
Mears’ reserved demeanor often betrays his aggressive on-track driving style, and if one would inquire with the soft-spoken driver as to how his presence has elevated Germain Racing to a Top 25 team, he will respond humbly.  Mears is happy to have improved the GEICO team’s performance, but he is not content with where they are right now.  He believes that something better awaits them.
 
“I’ve enjoyed the last few months and the opportunity to work with Germain Racing and our sponsor GEICO,” Mears said.  “It’s been fun to get out there and be competitive and beat some of the top teams each week, but I know we are just beginning.  As I’ve said in the past, I will put this team up against any team in the garage.”   
He continued, “I really can’t thank GEICO enough for their support of what we’re doing.  Aside from being the primary sponsor for 18 races, they’re also working with us to help secure additional sponsorship for the other half of the season.  It’s a great partnership and we’re all operating with big picture vision.”
 
Mears has given Germain Racing and GEICO cause for optimism and their collective efforts will surely create a viable path to success.  That path begins with the tire test this week in Daytona.
 
Just two months remain before the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series arrives at Daytona International Speedway to get the 2011 season underway.

REAR GEAR THWARTS MEARS’ HOMESTEAD RUN

Homestead, FL (November 21, 2010) – Casey Mears and the GEICO Racing team arrived in Homestead looking to put GEICO in the field for their first ever NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the south Florida season finale.  Mears and the Germain Racing team have proven themselves as a solid Top 25 team and looked to continue their run in Homestead.

 

On Friday, practice got off to a fast start and Mears would shoot to the top of the speed chart and run in the Top 20.  As the practice came to a close, the #13 GEICO Camry dropped to 39th as the team prepared to head into Sprint Cup Series qualifying late Friday afternoon.

 

A year ago, the #13 GEICO Camry was sent home after narrowly missing the race, but Mears’ qualifying lap of 30.948 seconds on Friday ensured that it would not happen twice.  The #13 GEICO Camry would line up three spots ahead of Denny Hamlin who would later spend his afternoon attempting to notch his first Sprint Cup Series championship.

 

When the season finale got underway under bright, clear skies and temperatures in the 80’s, Mears wasted little time moving forward.  Starting 34th, he moved the #13 GEICO Camry into 29th by the close of the second lap. 

 

When the event’s first caution flag waved on Lap 18, Mears was running in the 30th position and radioed to crew chief Bootie Barker: “There’s no front grip.  The front grip is terrible.”  Barker assured Mears that the team would go to work on the #13 Camry upon his arrival on pit road under the caution flag. 

 

The following lap, Mears brought the #13 GEICO Camry to the attention of the Germain Racing pit crew and they furnished him with four fresh Goodyear Racing tires, a tank of Sunoco racing fuel and the necessary adjustments to assist with the front grip.  After coming down pit road in the 30th position, the Germain Racing pit crew returned Mears to the racing surface 27th, netting three positions on pit road. 

 

Just two laps after going back under the green flag, Mears and the #13 GEICO Camry picked up three positions, moving into 24th before the caution flag reemerged when Denny Hamlin was sent for a spin through the infield grass.  Mears stayed out and did not come down pit road, given he had just made a visit two laps earlier.

 

Mears reached the 23rd position by Lap 28 and Lap 53 found him telling Barker that his GEICO Camry ‘feels tight in the center’. 

 

Mears brought the #13 GEICO Camry down pit road on Lap 70 for a scheduled green flag pit stop.  He took on four tires and fuel and returned to the race in the 37th position.  Two laps later, Mears had picked up five positions and was sitting 32nd.  A lap later, on Lap 73, he was 31st and he informed Barker that his car ‘is a lot better in the center’. 

 

Mears reached 30th before the caution flag was displayed on Lap 98.  He visited pit road to receive four tires, fuel and adjustments, as he continued to battle an ill-handling racecar.  After restarting 33rd on Lap 103, he radioed to Barker on Lap 103, “It’s weird.  I’m a little tighter, but I’m not any better.”

 

Something must have gotten better because Mears began to move the #13 GEICO Camry through the field.  He reached 30th by Lap 124 and then found himself in 28th when Marcos Ambrose went for a spin on Lap 135, once again bringing out the yellow. 

 

After restarting 28th on Lap 140, Mears jumped to 27th before the caution flag waved just a lap later when Juan Pablo Montoya and Joey Logano found themselves tangled up. 

 

Mears spent a short time down a lap, but quickly hustled to 26th position on Lap 146 and put himself in the Lucky Dog position – the first car a lap down.  The racing gods showed mercy on Mears and the GEICO Racing team, as the caution flag was displayed on Lap 164, allowing Mears to return to the Lead Lap. 

 

Although he was a lap down, Mears had been consistently faster than the cars in front of him, so returning to the Lead Lap offered the opportunity to start gaining positions.  He wasted little time.  After restarting 26th on Lap 169, Mears had the #13 GEICO Camry 25th on the subsequent lap.  He then jumped to 24th on Lap 172, 23rd on Lap 181 and was running 21st when the cautionflag came out for debris on Lap 187. 

 

With 75 laps to go, he was running in the 20th position. 

 

After the caution came out on Lap 195 when Dave Blaney hit the wall, Mears came down pit road for four tires and fuel.  Barker informed Mears that he would be short on fuel and that he would need to pit one more time prior to the conclusion of the race.  72 laps remained and the #13 GEICO Camry would be able to travel 53 laps on a full tank of fuel.

 

After restarting 28th on Lap 199, the caution flag came out once again just two laps later when Jeff Gordon’s motor blew on the frontstretch.  Mears took the opportunity to bring the #13 GEICO Camry down pit road to top off with fuel. 

 

Mears restarted 29th on Lap 206 and began a run through the field.  On Lap 214, he passed both Bill Elliott and Bobby Labonte to move back into the Top 25. 

 

A week ago in Phoenix, Mears found himself stuck in fourth gear for the vast majority of the race beforehustling to a 24th place finish.  Homestead saw the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry once again battling a gear issue as Sunday’s race wound down.

 

While running 24th on Lap 233, Mears radioed to Barker that he felt like he lost the driveline and gears.  Barker instructed him to take the #13 GEICO Camry directly to the garage.  No one could have predicted what would happen next.  Upon inspection of the racecar it was determined that the rear gear broke, something that rarely, if ever, happens in racing. 

 

Mears was out of the race with just 34 laps remaining.  After starting 34th, Mears and the GEICO team would be relegated to a 33rd place finish, a colossal disappointment considering they had run solidly in the Top 25 for much of the day and appeared destined for a Top 20 finish.

 

While Mears was visibly disappointed, he spoke with big picture vision.

 

“Something like this is tough because these things just don’t happen; rear gears don’t normally break,” Mears said.  “But it’s racing and I’m sure we all think we’ve seen everything until we see the next crazy thing.  I’m heartbroken for this team because we have worked so hard to get to the point where we are now as a solid Top 25 team.  We have made tremendous improvement since August and I almost wish Daytona (2011) was next week because we keep improving and we feel we’re better than a lot of the teams out there.” 

 

He continued, “When the season ends it means that Thanksgiving is around the corner and I always think of our troops serving in forward areas.  What we do here at the racetrack each week is a sport, but what our troops do is life or death and they provide the blanket of freedom that we sleep under each night.  Our troops and their families are in Trish (wife) and I’s thoughts as we count our blessings this holiday season.”

 

Since Mears took over driving duties of the #13 GEICO Camry in August, the team has missed just one race and has consistently finished in the Top 25 each week.  The 2011 season will find GEICO as the primary sponsor for 18 races, leaving an exceptional opportunity for a company to come on-board and complete the season.  The names ‘Mears’ and ‘GEICO’ are synonymous with greatness and a company looking to expand awareness would benefit from a relationship with both. 

 

Less than three months remain before the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series arrives at Daytona International Speedway to get the 2011 season underway.

GEICO SWELL ON MEARS; ADDS PHOENIX AND HOMESTEAD

Mooresville, NC (November 10, 2010) – Initially scheduled to appear as the primary sponsor of the #13 Germain Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series entry for 18 races during the 2010 season, GEICO’s excitement has grown.  After Talladega, the insurance giant decided to add the Texas Sprint Cup Series race and then, after the checkered flag was displayed in Fort Worth last weekend, they began contemplating the balance of the season. 

 

Late yesterday, GEICO called the offices of Germain Racing and announced that they would be picking up primary sponsorship of Casey Mears and the #13 GEICO Camry for the remaining two Sprint Cup Series races, at Phoenix and Homestead.  GEICO will also appear as a major associate sponsor on the #30 Toyota Tundra of Todd Bodine, who currently has a firm grasp on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points lead.

 

When NASCAR arrives in Homestead for NASCAR’s season finale, the GEICO Gecko will boast a full schedule.  With today’s announcement, GEICO will find themselves on three entries when race activities get underway on the Germain family’s home turf in south Florida.  Aside from the entries of Mears and Bodine, the charming and exciting ‘Mad’ Max Papis will join his teammates, as he pilots the #9 GEICO Toyota Tundra in his final Truck Series race of the season before embarking on a full-time Truck Series schedule in 2011.

 

After GEICO announced their sponsorship of the #13 Toyota Camry for Phoenix and Homestead, Mears’ face softened and a smile emerged.

 

“This is great news and I think it says a lot about GEICO’s faith and belief in what we’re doing here; where we started, where we are and where we’re going,” Mears said.  “We’re deeply appreciative of GEICO’s continued support.  It’s been fun to get out there and be competitive every week.  Even in Texas where we had a really tough day, maybe the toughest day we’ve had, we were still able to work hard, stay focused and escape the place with a 26th place finish.”  He continued, “We have a great team of guys here and the Germain family has great belief in what we’re doing, so the atmosphere around the shop is very exciting.”

 

Mears and the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry will hit the 1-mile tri-oval of Phoenix International Raceway for the opening practice session at 2:00 PM (ET) on Friday, November 12th. Qualifying will follow at 5:45 PM (ET).

 

The Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, November 14th, and it will be televised live on ESPN beginning at 3:00 PM (ET).  The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will carry the live radio broadcast.
