Tenth for Mears, GEICO Chevy at Talladega in GEICO 500

Posted by lori in Untagged

MEARS AND THE GECKO TURN IN TOP-10 FINISH AT GEICO 500

Germain Racing completes all four 2014 restrictor-plate races with average finish of ninth

Talladega, AL (October 19, 2014) - The October Talladega race has long been circled on Germain Racing's calendar. After much anticipation, the weekend finally arrived and Casey Mears looked strong when practice got underway for the GEICO 500, the final restrictor-plate race of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Aside from racing activities, Mears would participate in a host of events to promote the race, including autograph signings and an event where he presented the Golden Gecko Award to the most creatively decorated motorhome.

Mears was 22nd in the weekend's opening practice, but appeared strong as he charged to the front of the field during the session. When final practice got started, the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS took command and rested in the fifth position on the scoring tower when happy hour concluded late Friday afternoon.

Qualifying was scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 4:40 PM (EDT), leaving the Germain Racing team to endure a long day before being able to claim their spot on the GEICO 500 starting grid. Once it began, Mears and his GEICO Chevy were sporty and when the first round of qualifying was complete, they were second fastest and advanced to the next round. In the second round, Mears was solidly in the top ten before a fellow driver dropped out of the draft leaving the No. 13 GEICO Chevy all alone. An otherwise bizarre qualifying session, which saw many top drivers using a provisional to get in and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. missing the race altogether, would leave Mears 19th on Sunday's starting grid.

A packed house looked on as the green flag signaled the start of Sunday's GEICO 500. Mears and his No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS would begin their journey from the 19th position. After picking up positions in the opening laps, a car in front of him began leaking fluid which then blanketed Mears' windshield, leaving him unable to see clearly as he navigated the draft. He would immediately drop out of line and fall to the rear with the balance of NASCAR's elite who chose to take the safe route of riding at the back of the field until the closing laps. A scheduled green flag pit stop on lap 39 allowed Mears to bring his GEICO Chevy to the attention of his Germain Racing pit crew, who provided him with four fresh Goodyear tires, a full tank of Sunoco racing fuel and a window tear-off that restored his field of vision. He then returned to the racing surface and began a methodic charge to the front that saw him reach the top-five by lap 78, where he would settle in and ride for the next 25 laps.

As the race began to wind down, Mears found himself shuffled back as far as the 21st position with just 20 laps remaining in the event. He and his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series counterparts would find it difficult to maneuver through the field and recapture previously surrendered positions.

In true Talladega fashion, the GEICO 500 would be settled at the hands of two attempts at a green-white-checker finish. The first attempt failed after a crash collected several cars to the rear of Mears and his GEICO Chevy, however a second attempt saw the field complete the full three laps. Mears restarted the race from a challenging 16th position, but jostled his way around the high-banked 2.66-mile superspeedway and managed to collect six spots in the closing two laps to cross the finish line in the 10th position. His full throttle hustle accounts for the team's third top-ten finish of the 2014 season. More significant is the fact that Mears and the GEICO team have successfully completed all four restrictor-plate races of the 2014 season with an average finish of ninth, a notable feat for any team on the Sprint Cup Series circuit.

"It's been an exciting, busy weekend for the obvious reason, so I'm happy we had a solid run for GEICO and all of the associates at the track today," Mears said. "We played it right for the most part, held back when we should have and missed incidents, then we ran hard and the incidents were behind us. The team did a nice job of getting me on and off of pit road and Bootie [Barker, crew chief] made good calls. At the end of the day, we stayed clean and had a good top-10 finish. I'm really proud of the guys back at the shop and the road crew that have worked so hard to ensure the success of our restrictor-plate program." He continued, "I want to thank all of the folks at GEICO for being so committed to our sport and for caring about its health, as well as caring about our fans. The GEICO 500 was well organized and it was fun to see the NASCAR fans embracing all of the GEICO activities and having fun."

With just four races remaining on the schedule, Mears and his GEICO team will now head to the paperclip-shaped facility of Martinsville, the shortest track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule.

Casey Mears and the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS will hit the track at Martinsville Speedway for the weekend's opening practice session on Friday, October 24th, at 12:00 PM (EDT). Qualifying will follow at 4:40 PM (EDT).

The Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, October 26th, and it will be televised live on ESPN beginning at 1:30 PM (EDT). The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will carry the live radio broadcast, along with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.

Kansas Race Recap - October 2014

Posted by lori in Untagged

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEARS AND GEICO TEAM PERSEVERE THROUGH LONG DAY IN KANSAS

Kansas City, KS (October 5, 2014) - With the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season winding down, the Germain Racing team headed to Kansas looking to have a strong run. Rain and cold weather welcomed Casey Mears and his team, but the precipitation cleared on Friday afternoon and created a pathway to a cool, beautiful weekend.

When practice finally got underway on Friday, Mears and his No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS finished up 24th in the first practice session. Later, Mears would narrowly miss the cut in the first round of qualifying and would start from the 26th position in Sunday's Hollywood Casino 400.

Bright, clear skies and cool temperatures made for a perfect combination when drivers took to the starting grid eyeing 267-laps of racing. Mears and the GEICO Chevy started from the 26th position when the green flag got the race underway on Sunday afternoon. He seemed to be quick, as he promptly collected four positions and sat 22nd at the close of the opening lap. By lap six, however, he was reporting to crew chief Bootie Barker that the car was "plowing". He also reported chatter in the front tires on lap 16. The handling of the No. 13 GEICO Chevy kept Mears busy as the race wore on. By lap 28, he was in the 28th position and reported, "I'm tight everywhere, but really tight center off. It's like the steering wheel is upside down it's so tight."

In a race that featured eight caution flags, Barker and his Germain Racing crew would work feverishly during each pit stop in an attempt to correct the handling of the No. 13 GEICO Chevy SS. They lost laps to the leaders, but would later gamble on taking wavearounds to recover previously surrendered real estate. In each case, the gamble would fail to pay off, leaving Mears and his GEICO Chevy to pit under green conditions and forcing them multiple laps down to the field as the race began to wind down. The checkered flag waved late Sunday afternoon, putting an end to a tough day for the Germain Racing team. Mears crossed the finish line in the 28th position after dealing with handling issues for the bulk of the 400-mile event. Despite the challenging result, Mears still remains just one of four drivers to have completed every race on the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule.

"It was a long day for sure, we definitely have some things we need to work on," Mears said. "Our GEICO Chevy was a handful today, but I appreciate all of our crew's hard work on pit road as we tried to make changes and improve the racecar. We'll get back to the shop and debrief and talk about what happened today and then we'll turn our focus to having a good weekend at Charlotte."

Mears and the Germain Racing team will now enjoy some time at home, as next weekend will find them racing just down the road in Concord, NC.

Casey Mears and the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS will hit the track at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the weekend's opening practice session on Thursday, October 9th, at 1:30 PM (EDT). Qualifying will follow at 7:20 PM (EDT).

The Bank of America 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Saturday, October 11th, and it will be televised live on ABC beginning at 7:30 PM (EDT). The Performance Racing Network (PRN) will carry the live radio broadcast, along with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.

GEICO Racing Report from Dover

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEARS CAPS OFF BUSY WEEK WITH STRONG RUN AT THE MONSTER MILE

Dover, DE (September 28, 2014) - After a solid run in New Hampshire, Casey Mears and the GEICO team headed to Dover, DE, armed with a battle plan for the track affectionately referred to as the Monster Mile. First though, Mears and the Germain Racing crew would stop and visit with service members at Dover Air Force Base, where they took part in a C-17 orientation flight with the 436th Airlift Wing. They found themselves experiencing in-air refueling of aircraft, cargo deployment and an assault landing. Germain Racing would reciprocate when 20 members of the Air Force joined the team at the 400-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday.

Mears and his No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS got off to a quick start on Friday when they finished up 21st fastest in the weekend's opening practice session. He would later qualify 30th for Sunday's race before rebounding with solid practices on Saturday.

Bright sunshine and heat accompanied the anticipated action on the racetrack when the event got underway on Sunday afternoon. Mears playfully commented over the r adio during the parade laps that the "man upstairs put another log on the fire." He started from the 30th position when the green flag turned the field loose for 400-miles of racing.

Mears had the GEICO Chevy in the 28th position when debris brought out the first caution flag of the afternoon on lap 62. He took the opportunity to visit pit road where the GEICO crew refreshed him with four fresh tires, fuel and adjustments. While the pit crew turned in a quick stop, Mears wo  uld unfortunately be assessed a speeding penalty that would relegate him to the 38th position when the race went back to green on lap 67. When the caution flag reappeared just eight laps later on lap 75, the No. 13 GEICO Chevy was in 34th and once again traveled down pit road for service. The Germain Racing crew shifted into high gear and returned Mears to the racing surface four positions to the good in 30th when the race returned to green on lap 79. One lap down to the field, Mears pedaled quickly around the high-banked one-mile oval and was sitting in the free pass position when a much-needed yellow flag waved on lap 170 and returned the GEICO Chevy to the lead lap.

Mears consistently posted top-5 and top-10 lap times and ran solidly in the top-25 throughout the afternoon. When a long green flag run towards the end of the race left Mears at full speed for an extended period of time, crew chief Bootie Barker warned the GEICO driver that he would be approximately two-laps short on fuel and advised him to save where he could. With just 50 laps remaining in the race, Mears was forced to save fuel. Consequently, he would surrender crucial real estate, which resulted in a loss of positions that left him in 27th when the checkered flag closed out 400-laps of racing. While 27th was not the desired result, the alternative could have been an empty fuel tank that would have left the team in a more dire situation.

"Today was an odd day because we ran pretty well and had speed, so it was a hard-fought 27th place finish for the GEICO team," Mears said. "This place is tough. If we don't have to save fuel, maybe we finish a few spots better, but all in all it was a strong day and the crew did a great job on pit road, as well. It was also nice to have so many of the folks from our visit to Dover Air Force Base with us today. They were very generous during our C-17 orientation flight, so it was cool to be able to do something for them and show them a good time."

The next stop for Mears and his GEICO team on the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule is the Sunflower State.

Casey Mears and the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS will hit the track at Kansas Speedway for the weekend's opening practice session on Friday, October 3rd, at 1:00 PM (EDT). Qualifying will follow at 5:45 PM (EDT).

The Hollywood Casino 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, October 5th, and it will be televised live on ESPN beginning at 2:00 PM (EDT). The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will carry the live radio broadcast, along with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.

Loudon Race Report - GEICO Chevy SS

Posted by lori in Untagged

MEARS AND GERMAIN RACING REBOUND WITH STRONG RUN IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Player Management International Media Release

Loudon, NH (September 21, 2014) – After tough races at Richmond and Chicago, Casey Mears and the GEICO Racing team aimed for redemption at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.  While the track has caused Germain Racing headaches in past visits, this weekend saw the team rebound from their previous experiences.

Friday left the team hopeful after Mears landed the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS 19th on the board in the weekend’s opening practice session.  He would later tour the Magic Mile in just 27.558-seconds during qualifying, which placed him 25th on the Sylvania 300 starting grid.

The weather forecast played cat and mouse with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series before surrendering and giving way to 303-laps of racing on Sunday afternoon.  Mears rolled off 25th when racing action began and during the lap 35 competition caution, crew chief Bootie Barker notified Mears that his lap times were good.  By lap 131, Mears had moved the No. 13 GEICO Chevy into the 17th position.  Later, when the yellow flag slowed the field on lap 211, Barker and Mears used strategy to gain track position and restarted in the second position when the race returned to green on lap 215.  Six laps later, when the caution flag reappeared, Mears was running in the seventh position, but needed to pit since he was off-sequence.  He would restart 16th and run solidly in the top-20 for the bulk of the afternoon.  The GEICO pit crew was efficient during pit stops, gaining Mears positions on many of his visits, which assisted in his ascent during the course of the race.

The GEICO Chevy had speed and experienced little issue running with the front of the field, as he often turned top-5 lap times.  Mears remained on the lead lap for the entire day and crossed the finish line in the 22nd position after the race was decided by a green-white-checker finish.  Today’s effort is marked improvement from the team’s visit to New Hampshire in July, where a mechanical issue left Mears 13 laps down with a 38th place finish.  Mears’ finish also accounts for Germain Racing’s 20th top-25 finish of the 2014 season.

“We had some decent speed today and it was probably the best race we’ve had there, so all in all it was good and it was nice to get back on track after a couple of tough races,” Mears said.  “It’ll be fun going to Dover next week because it’s not far from GEICO and we usually have some of their folks join us at the race.  Also, the team is going on a C-17 orientation flight with personnel from Dover Air Force Base, so it’s an opportunity for everyone to have some fun and get an appreciation for what our military does on a daily basis.”
Mears and his GEICO Chevy will now head to Dover, DE, to do battle with the Monster Mile.

Casey Mears and the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS will hit the track at Dover International Speedway for the weekend’s opening practice session on Friday, September 26th, at 11:00 AM (EDT) and it will be televised live on FoxSports1.  Qualifying will follow at 3:40 PM (EDT) and will air live on ESPN2.

The Dover NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, September 28th, and it will be televised live on ESPN beginning at 2:00 PM (EDT).  The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will carry the live radio broadcast, along with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.

Chicagoland Race Results - GEICO Chevy SS

MEARS AND THE GECKO ESCAPE WINDY CITY WITH 26TH PLACE FINISH

Joliet, IL (September 14, 2014) - Chicago is a race that Casey Mears leaves circled on his calendar, and for good reason. In 2006, the Bakersfield, CA, native scored his first NASCAR win in the Windy City before capturing the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pole there a year later in 2007. Intermediate tracks have proved challenging for Germain Racing, but the team was hopeful that the trend would change.

While the opening practice saw Mears and his No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS land 29th on the board, Saturday morning's session found them bouncing back, jumping to 16th on the speed chart. Unfortunately, Mother Nature got the best of the 1.5-mile speedway on Friday afternoon, as the track succumbed to heavy rain and left Sprint Cup Series qualifying canceled. Consequently, Sunday's starting field would be set according to the speeds in the weekend's first practice session, relegating Mears to 29th on the starting grid.

When race day rolled around, inclement weather was an afterthought and only clear skies, bright sunshine and cool temperatures were present to welcome race fans. Mears started 29th on Sunday and looked to make quick progress when the green flag turned the field loose for 267 laps of racing. While the GEICO Chevy experienced some immediate movement that saw Mears jump three positions to 26th in the race's first two laps, the car quickly betrayed him and the handling soon became a source of frustration. He alerted crew chief Bootie Barker, "It worked real good for the first couple of laps, but then got tight in the center." Mears would hustle the No. 13 GEICO Chevy up to the 20th position before being forced down pit road for a scheduled green flag pit stop on lap 46. Just a single lap after departing pit road, Mears reported, "It's really, really tight."

With each pit stop, the Germain Racing crew worked hard to make the necessary changes to the GEICO Chevy. The adjustments seemed to serve as little affect and Mears would fall as low as 31st before the changes to the car began to help and he made up ground as the laps wound down. Mears reported that the car was turning better, which assisted him as he attempted to collect positions in the closing laps of the race. When the checkered flag was displayed after 400.5-miles of racing, Mears and his GEICO team managed to hustle to a 26th place finish.

Today's effort makes Germain Racing one of just four teams to have completed all 27 races, a major feat in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition. Mears also remains 24th in the point standings, just ahead of Martin Truex, Jr., Tony Stewart and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.

"Today was a tough race and we battled the car most of the afternoon, but it got better there at the end," Mears said. "The GEICO crew worked really hard and it came around later in the race, but we still have some work to do and we'll now look forward to getting to Loudon and getting back on track."

Mears and his GEICO team will now head north to New England for race number 28 of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

Casey Mears and the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS will hit the track at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the weekend's opening practice session on Friday, September 19th, at 12:00 PM (EDT). Qualifying will follow at 4:40 PM (EDT).

The Sylvania 300 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, September 21st, and it will be televised live on ESPN beginning at 2:00 PM (EDT). The Performance Racing Network (PRN) will carry the live radio broadcast, along with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.
