Lofton Leads Some Laps, Tallies Solid Finish in Devil Brigade Tundra in Kansas

 

Kansas City, KS. - Saturday's O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 was a special race to Justin Lofton and the No. 77 Germain Racing team. After a visit to nearby Fort Riley on Thursday, Lofton climbed behind the wheel of his race truck at Kansas Speedway with a special paint scheme in honor of his new friends within the Devil Brigade; the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division of the United States Army. With 45 soldiers showing their support on Saturday, Lofton led some laps, contended within the top-10, and despite a late race pit road penalty, nailed down a solid 19th place finish.

 

"I had so much fun at Fort Riley on Thursday. I went last year and it was nice seeing some old faces as well as meeting some new ones. They came out in full force today and it was really a lot of fun to have them out here. After they let me go through some of their training sessions, it was neat to show them what I do," Lofton said of the soldiers within the Devil Brigade.

 

"We put on a show for them with the No. 77 Devil Brigade Tundra leading some laps. It was really hot out there and the track was slick, but the truck was a lot of fun to drive. We got caught up there on that last stop, but overall, it was a good day."

 

Prior to taking the green flag, Lofton met with members of the Devil Brigade, signing autographs, taking photos, and thanking them for their service. After a few photos by the truck, Lofton climbed in, rolling off of the grid from the 18th spot.

 

After an early caution flag just 18 laps in, and while some leaders opted to stay on track, Lofton dropped down pit road for four tires and fuel. Four laps after the restart, he had climbed from 21st to 17th.

 

As the laps clicked down, Lofton continued his climb through the field, moving into the top-10 by lap 50.  By that point, some trucks elected to make green flag pit stops. Having pit under the first yellow, the No. 77 Devil Brigade Toyota was able to stay on track, inheriting the lead on lap 55.

 

After holding the position for just over six laps, Lofton prepared to drop down pit road for his stop. Simultaneously, a caution flag waved, allowing Lofton to make his stop under yellow.  The pit crew sprang into action, swapped out the tires, added fuel, and sent Lofton back on track. For the restart, the No. 77 machine lined up from the fourth position.

 

As the race hit the 100-lap mark Lofton showed in the 12th spot as he informed his crew that the truck was handling a bit tight. Two more pit stops allowed the crew to tune on the truck, with the final stop falling under the seventh and final caution flag of the race on lap 133. The team made spring rubber and track bar adjustments in addition to adding four fresh tires and fuel. Unfortunately, NASCAR clocked the No. 77 Devil Brigade Tundra running slightly over pit road speed on the exit. The penalty dropped Lofton to the back of the pack for the restart.

 

With the final 30 laps staying green, Lofton reclaimed as many positions as possible, crossing the finish line in 19th at the drop of the checkered flag.

 

"It was a tough race out there, battling the heat all day, but the truck was good. I feel like we could have gained some of those spots back if we had a few more laps. The most important thing is that we've got a good truck and a lot to grow with next week in Texas," Lofton said.  

 

Lofton and the No. 77 team will next hit the track on Friday, June 10th at the Texas Motor Speedway.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (June 4, 2011) – The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) added another mark in the history books this weekend, as the competitive series completed its 400th race on Saturday afternoon at Kansas Speedway. Despite making his first NCWTS start at the 1.5-mile oval, Max Papis looked to collect a top-10 finish in the historic event. Unfortunately, an accident on lap 112 left the No. 9 GEICO Toyota Tundra with damage, relegating the team to a 22nd-place finish.

 

During qualifying on Saturday morning, Papis laid down a lap of 32.758 seconds (164.845 mph), placing the GEICO Toyota in the 20th position to start the 167-lap race. Within the first 10 laps, Papis reported to Crew Chief Randy Goss that his truck was loose entering and in the middle of the corners. The first caution came on lap 18 and Papis brought his truck to pit road for four tires, fuel, and adjustments.

 

The majority of the leaders made the decision to stay out and not pit during the caution, putting Papis in the 23rd position on the lap 22 restart. The adjustments helped the Germain Racing entry, however the Toyota was still loose. On lap 47, the leaders began to pit under green flag conditions as they reached their fuel cycle. Papis remained on the racetrack, due to his previous pit stop, and moved into the seventh-place by lap 60.

 

Two laps later a lucky break came for the GEICO Racing team, as the caution slowed the field and allowed Papis to pit under yellow. Goss brought his Italian driver in for four tires, fuel, and adjustments. A great stop by the over-the-wall crew picked up two positions for Papis to restart from fourth-place on lap 66.

 

Before the competitors could make one circuit, another caution was brought out for a single-truck spin. Papis had to return to pit road as the team had discovered the truck was not full of fuel from the previous stop. Goss used this time to make an additional adjustment to tighten up the GEICO machine.

 

Papis restarted on lap 71 from the 19th position. As the laps clicked off, the loose handling condition continued to plague the GEICO Toyota Tundra. The fifth caution of the afternoon came on lap 99 for debris on the backstretch. Papis returned to pit road for four tires, fuel, and adjustments, before restarting in the 16th-place on lap 103.

 

While battling with Shane Sieg for position, Papis received contact from the competitor, sending the GEICO Toyota into the outside wall. Right-side damage forced the team to pit for repairs, but good work once again by the team allowed Papis to retain his position on the lead lap and return racing as the 250-mile event restarted on lap 116.

 

Over the final 50 laps, the damage continued to hinder Papis’ quest to gain additional positions, leaving the GEICO Racing team with a 22nd-place finish. With the unfortunate ending, Papis dropped one spot in the NCWTS Championship Point Standings and is tied for 11th-place with Joey Coulter. Both drivers are only one point behind Germain Racing teammate Brendan Gaughan, who holds the 10th position.

 

Next week, Papis and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series head to Texas Motor Speedway for a country showdown under the lights on Friday, June 10th. Coverage begins live on SPEED Channel at 8 p.m. ET.

Mooresville, N.C. (June 2, 2011) - Germain Racing will show up in Kansas sporting a look similar to what they debuted in Daytona on the No. 30 Tundra. The reigning NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion, Todd Bodine, will drive the No. 30 NTB/Service Central/Valvoline Tundra at Kansas Speedway, a track where he finished third last year, and, a track where he and his crew, led by Mike Hillman Jr., know how to win. After a tough weekend in front of the home crowd at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Bodine and Hillman are ready for some vindication in Kansas.

 

“We need to get back on track and Kansas is as good a place as any.  Mile and a half tracks are our strong suit and we hope to prove that once again. The track has some wear on it and has continued to grow character. Drivers can move around the track into different grooves and make their trucks run faster. We are taking a brand new race truck for Germain Racing and the No. 30 NTB/Service Central/Valvoline Tundra should be great,” said Bodine.

 

Kansas Speedway is a much different track than Charlotte Motor Speedway. Bodine explains that the shape of the Kansas circuit means momentum and corner speed are the focus.

“Kansas is really wide and the field does spread out there. It drives more like a Michigan or California. There’s a lot more momentum than most mile and a half tracks. You have to keep the center of the corner speed up to get a good lap time and that’s been one of our strong points. Hopefully we can make it work to our advantage with our No. 30 NTB/Service Central/Valvoline Tundra this weekend,” said Bodine.

 

Bodine is strapping into racing chassis GR-019 for Saturday’s Kansas Speedway Truck Series race. He is currently ranked eleventh in the championship standings.

Mooresville, N.C. (June 1, 2011) - NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Brendan Gaughan is no stranger to Kansas Speedway. He’s scored top-ten finishes in each of NASCAR’s three national series and has seven Truck Series starts under his belt at the 1.5-mile track. Gaughan is looking to see the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra back in form as it was in Charlotte last week, but in Kansas, he and his crew want the finish to match their performance level.

 

“Our Toyota Tundra was really good at Charlotte. I think our mile and a half stuff is really going in the right direction. We’ll take what we learned from Charlotte and go to Kansas and see what we can do. I’ve said it from the get-go, this is part of the season where I think Germain Racing can win and I feel we can win at Kansas,” said Gaughan.

 

Gaughan gets to visit with some Kansas troops before racing—something which is dear to him and his teammates.

 

“On Thursday I’m going over to Fort Riley with Justin Lofton to do some troop appreciation which is a huge deal to me and Germain Racing. There are a lot of bases in the area, a lot of military personnel. Even though Memorial Day has passed, it’s still a great opportunity to hang out with the troops and show some appreciation for all they do for all of us,” said Gaughan, who can often be spotted wearing hats from troop members he meets.

 

Kansas is perfectly suited to Gaughan, according to the Las Vegas native.

 

“Kansas is different from the Texas and Charlotte types of tracks where drivers like to work the higher groove. Everyone is nervous to go high at Kansas, which means there will be less people in my preferred groove, so that will help me get by people,” smiled Gaughan.

Mears - GEICO Camry - 600 Recap

DETERMINATION PAYS OFF FOR MEARS IN 600-MILE RACE; FINISHES 23RD

 

 

CONCORD, N.C. (May 29, 2011) – A normal NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race averages 400 to 500 miles, 300 laps, and three hours. However, there is one event every May that lasts a little longer – The Coca-Cola 600. The longest race of the season puts strain on the drivers, teams, and equipment as 600 miles, 400 laps, and over four and half hours require top performance and endurance.

 

All of this action completes a full two weeks of racing at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, the home track for many teams including Casey Mears and the Mooresville, N.C. based GEICO Racing Toyota crew.

 

After three practices and a disappointing qualifying effort of 37th, Mears was hopeful to have a solid race and survive all 600 miles under the hot Sunday night temperature. Starting in the back of the pack, Mears knew he had ground to make up in the beginning stages of the race. By lap 25, the GEICO Toyota Camry had moved into the 31st position, however Mears quickly radioed to his team that he was not pleased with the amount of horsepower under the hood, as he would pass competitors only to have them chase him back down on the straightaway.

 

The first 170 laps saw Mears’ Toyota get tighter as the green flag run continued but the California native clocked consistent lap times in spite of the engine woes. The third caution of the evening came on lap 172, as Crew Chief Bootie Barker instructed Mears to stay on the racetrack and regain a lap, placing the GEICO Toyota in the 30th position.

 

Unfortunately, the second gremlin found Mears on lap 188 as the No. 13 Camry received contact from Landon Cassill, cutting the left rear tire on the Germain Racing machine. The tire shredded the left rear quarter panel before Mears could make it pit road. The GEICO crew worked feverishly to repair the damage on numerous stops, and with hard work, Mears never lost a lap in the process. On lap 194, Mears restarted in 30th-place.

 

Over the course of the next run, Mears told his GEICO crew that his cooling hose that connects to his in-car air conditioning system had come undone, leaving the cockpit extremely hot. Immediately, the team began preparing ice bags, fresh water, and a new system to help relieve their driver. For the remainder of the event, the GEICO Racing team refueled Mears on each pit stop.

 

By lap 282, Mears had worked his way into the 26th position. The GEICO Toyota had become loose, hindering the ability to get in and get off the corners. A break finally came for Mears and the GEICO team as they received the Lucky Dog Award on lap 295 to regain their position on the lead lap.

 

The field took the green flag restart on lap 302, with less than a 100 laps remaining. Three quick cautions broke up the pace over the next 40 laps, but Barker brought his driver to pit road on lap 345 for four tires, fuel, and air pressure adjustments. Continuing to fight through the circumstances, Mears was scored in 24th-place with 50 laps to go.

 

Right away, Mears and Barker decided to start saving fuel, as they were four laps short and were going to try and stretch it to the end if no cautions ruin the plan. This strategy looked like it was going to work out perfect before Jimmie Johnson lost a motor on lap 397, setting the stage for a green-white-checkered finish. Mears returned to pit road under this caution for four tires and fuel, ensuring he could make it the remaining distance.

 

Going three laps past the scheduled distance, Mears brought home a 23rd-place finish for the GEICO Racing team. The effort put in by the entire team was unmatched and completely exhibited the reason to keep pushing through unwanted circumstances.

 

“It was a hot one out there tonight,” said Mears, after the race. “We didn’t have very much go our way, but we never gave up the entire race. The GEICO Racing team kept working on the damage and made it fairly decent for the amount of sheet metal that was tore up. To come home 23rd isn’t the result we wanted, but for the circumstances we were dealt, it was a good night.  One of the keys to a 600-mile race is having a car that can survive it and Germain Racing gave me a car that took the checkered flag, so I appreciate their hard work. We will go on to Kansas.”

Lofton To Make Return Visit To Fort Riley

 

For the second year in a row, Justin Lofton, driver of the No. 77 Lofton Cattle Toyota Tundra in the Camping World Truck Series, will be heading to Kansas early in order to visit soldiers at nearby Fort Riley. Located roughly two hours from the Kansas Speedway, Lofton will spend Thursday at Fort Riley meeting soldiers, family members of deployed soldiers, signing autographs, and participating in various activities. Lofton's No. 77 Toyota Tundra will also be on display at Fort Riley throughout the day.     

 

"Last season's visit was a lot of fun. We got to do a lot of cool things around the base. But to be able to personally thank the troops, that meant a lot," Lofton said.    

 

Many of the soldiers Lofton met last season are now deployed. Fort Riley currently has close to 1,000 soldiers in Iraq and nearly 1900 in Afghanistan, with more set to deploy on Thursday, June 2, the day of Lofton's visit.  

 

"Some of the soldiers we met last year are now deployed. It will be nice to be able to see their families, and hopefully put a smile on their face while they are missing their loved ones," Lofton added.

 

This year, Lofton's trip will be even bigger. He will be joined by Germain Racing teammates Todd Bodine and Brendan Gaughan, as well as a SPEED camera crew. The visit will be featured on the pre-race NCWTS Set Up show next week in Texas.   

 

The cameras will have a lot of action to cover throughout the Kansas trip, and not just at Fort Riley. Lofton's No. 77 Toyota Tundra will have a different look this week in honor of his friends within the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team (1HBCT), 1st Infantry Division (1ID) of Fort Riley. The hood of Lofton's Tundra will feature the "Devil Brigade" Crest, as well as the Brigade name across the quarter panels.   

 

Over two dozen soldiers will join Lofton and the Germain Racing team at Kansas Speedway on Saturday to see the No. 77 Devil's Brigade Tundra battle it out in the O'Reilly Auto Parts 250.   

 

The 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division is the Army's oldest Brigade. The Brigade was reactivated in July 1958 at Fort Benning, Georgia as the 1st Infantry Brigade. In 1964, it rejoined the 1st Infantry Division, this time at Fort Riley, Kansas, and was re-designated as the 1st Brigade ("Devil Brigade") of the Big Red One. Throughout its history, 1st Brigade has always lead with pride as a member of "The Big Red One". 1st Brigade stands ready to defend our Nation, forever dedicated to the motto: "NO MISSION TOO DIFFICULT, NO SACRIFICE TOO GREAT - DUTY FIRST!"

NASCAR CHAMPION TODD BODINE SET TO DO BATTLE WITH THE FRIENDLY SKIES

 

Mooresville, NC (May 27, 2011) – Anyone close to Todd Bodine is acutely aware of his fierce competitive nature and that his on-track intensity betrays his reserved off-track demeanor.  And so it would seem natural that someone as accomplished as Bodine would continually seek something greater. 

 

For a guy who has accomplished so much on the NASCAR circuit, where does he turn to find a challenge?  Having notched Truck Series championships in 2006 and, most recently, 2010, Bodine is looking beyond the racetrack.  In fact, his sights are set on something much higher…literally.

 

On Saturday, May 28th, and Sunday, May 29th, Bodine will wheel a Germain Racing GEICO Toyota Tundra against nationally renowned aerobatic pilot, Tim Weber, and his GEICO powered Extra 300s airplane at the Millville Army Airfield Museum in Millville, New Jersey.  Weber will fly overhead while Bodine attempts to reach speed from a standing start.

 

With 650 horsepower under the hood of his GEICO Tundra, Bodine would appear to have the edge in the power department, as Weber’s airplane packs just 365 horsepower, but has a maximum speed of 250 miles per hour.  For the obvious reasons, this weekend’s showdown will provide the expected excitement. 

 

Having raced at America’s greatest venues, Bodine is looking forward to adding the tarmac in Millville, NJ, to his distinguished resume. 

 

“I’ve raced against some of the top racecar drivers in the world, but I’ve never raced against an airplane,” Bodine said with a smile.  “GEICO has been an associate sponsor on my truck the last two years and I appreciate the opportunity they’re giving me to do something so exciting.  I was happy to be able to give them a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship last year, so this event will only help to continue to shed light on our Truck Series program, as well as the other cool programs GEICO incorporates into their marketing strategy.”

Germain Racing Confirms Ownership Change

Mooresville, NC (May 23, 2011) – As has been reported in the media, Germain Racing has had a change in ownership.  The change comes about as part of an ongoing Germain-family estate plan. Steve Germain and Rick Germain have effectively transferred their ownership interests in Germain Racing to their brother Bob Germain Jr.  Bob Germain will continue his active role in the management of Germain Racing, LLC.

"Being able to share the wins and championships we’ve earned to date with my brothers has been very special. Steve and Rick's support of the team over the last seven years has helped us build a very strong foundation at Germain Racing. I am looking forward to the continued growth and success of this race team,” stated Bob Germain, President of Germain Racing.

TOUGH BREAK RUINS MAX PAPIS’ TOP-10 RUN AT CHARLOTTE

CONCORD, N.C. (May 20, 2011) – Twenty-four weeks out of the year, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series travels around the country, racing at tracks from Daytona to Las Vegas. However, there is one race at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway that every driver and team looks forward to. Instead of sleeping in hotels and being away from family, the GEICO Racing team gets to be at home, competing only miles away from the Mooresville, N.C. race shop.

Max Papis relishes the opportunity to race in front of the ‘home’ crowd. The one-day show at the 1.5-mile track started with two practice sessions where the GEICO crew tuned in the handling of the No. 9 Toyota Tundra. Optimistic entering qualifying for Friday night’s North Carolina Education Lottery 200, Papis laid down a lap of 30.888 seconds to place the Gecko in the 13th starting position.

Under beautiful weather conditions, Papis was ready to attack, stay out of trouble, and finish inside the top-10 at the end of 134 laps. SPEED Channel’s pit road reporter Hermie Sadler started the broadcast by spotlighting Papis and the No. 9 GEICO team for their performance so far this season, which provided an uplifting boost to the crew. Once the green flag dropped to start the event, Papis reported of a loose handling condition, causing the driver to drop back to the 20th position on lap four.

The first caution of the night came on lap nine for a spin by Papis’ Germain Racing teammate, Todd Bodine. Crew chief Randy Goss brought Papis to pit road for fuel and two rounds down on the track bar to help the loose condition. As the majority of the field stayed out, Papis restarted on lap 12 from 27th-place. In a short five laps, the GEICO Toyota was up to the 21st position.

Another caution slowed the pace on lap 21, with Papis inside the top-20. Goss called Papis back to pit road for four tires, fuel, and one round down on the track bar as the previous adjustments had helped the GEICO Tundra. Papis restarted on lap 25 from the 25th position. Over the next 25 laps, two cautions were brought out as Papis continued to gain ground on his competitors and move into 19th-place.

On lap 53, the fourth caution was displayed, as Papis returned to the attention of his GEICO crew for fuel and a right rear shock adjustment to continue to help with the loose handling in the center of the corner. Papis restarted in the 12th position on lap 59, challenging for a spot within the top-10. In one brief circuit around the Carolina track, Papis had taken over eighth-place.

Two quick cautions in 15 laps stalled Papis’ ability to continue his charge to the front. The lap 75 restart saw Papis in the seventh position and the GEICO team was hoping for a green flag run to help the No. 9 Toyota. Unfortunately, two short laps later on lap 77, Papis received racing contact in the right rear from Matt Crafton, sending the Gecko into teammate Brendan Gaughan. Heavy damage was sustained to the GEICO Toyota, but the crew resiliently repaired the truck on pit road during numerous stops to complete the race. 

Over the final 55 laps, Papis and the GEICO team continued to work on the truck when the chance became available, but the international driver was unable to pick up any spots. As the checkered flag flew, Papis crossed the finish line in the 25th position.

“It was a tough night for the GEICO team,” said Papis, after the race. “I’m extremely proud of the effort that the guys put in to build this brand new truck and it was very, very fast. We were going to have a great top-10 finish if not even higher, so it was definitely disappointing that we got contact in that wreck. Crafton came over and apologized, which was a very classy move. I said at the beginning of the year that 10% of the races in the championship were going to be nights like these and we had one. The GEICO crew will regroup and head to Kansas.”

Despite falling victim to a tough night, Papis still managed to maintain his status in the top 10 of the point standings, as he rests in the 10th position.  He sits just 10 points shy of seventh-place James Buescher. The Truck Series will take a one-week break before returning to racing action at Kansas Speedway on June 4, 2011.

MEARS FINISHES 12TH IN SHOWDOWN; GAINS GROUND FOR COCA-COLA 600

 

CONCORD, N.C. (May 21, 2011) – Each weekend as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series enters a different racetrack, the pressure follows. However, with no points on the line, the Sprint All Star Race at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway is one for drivers and teams to try new setups and get a starting point for next week’s Coca-Cola 600, the longest race of the 2011 season.

Casey Mears and the GEICO Racing team were prepared to race their way into the Sprint All Star main event, via the Sprint Showdown. The Showdown consisted of two 20-lap segments with a competition caution thrown by NASCAR in the middle of the segments. Only the top two finishers from the Showdown would transfer into the main All Star race.

The No. 13 GEICO Toyota Camry started the Showdown from the 11th position, as Mears laid down a solid lap of 28.278 seconds in qualifying on Friday afternoon. The first caution slowed the pace on lap three with Mears scored in the eighth position. The Bakersfield, California native radioed to Crew Chief Bootie Barker that the Gecko was “pretty darn good.” On lap nine, Mears restarted from the outside of row four before being shuffled out of position. As the first 20-lap segment came to a close, Mears held the 13th position and reported to the GEICO team that the Camry was tight to the center of the corner.

As the majority of the leaders decided to come to pit road for fresh tires during the segment break, Mears stayed on the racetrack to gain track position. The second and final 20-laps started on lap 21 with Mears in fifth-place. On the restart, the competitors with new tires behind Mears took off and the caution came on lap 28 with the GEICO Camry in the 11th position. Barker brought Mears to pit road for four tires, fuel, and an air pressure adjustment as the front end was sliding the nose.

With caution laps not counting during the second segment, Mears restarted on lap 28 from the 13th position. The final 11 laps went caution free, but with two laps remaining, Mears passed Martin Truex Jr. for 12th-place. The GEICO Toyota Camry went on to cross the finish line in that position.

“Overall we learned a decent amount for next weekend, which is the one that really counts,” said Mears after the Showdown. “Our pit stop tonight was really good and we were able to gain some information about the handling that will give us a better place to start in practice for the 600. The GEICO Camry was just too tight in the center, but we will get it fixed up and be ready to go.”

Mears and the GEICO Racing team will return to Charlotte Motor Speedway next week for the running of the Coca-Cola 600. Practice and qualifying are scheduled for Thursday, May 26th, while the race will take place on Sunday, May 29th.
