No. 5 NTB/Service Central Toyota Tundra News and Notes

  • This Week’s Tundra… The No. 5 NTB/Service Central team and Germain Racing driver Todd Bodine will utilize TRD-058 in Saturday’s 94-lap NCWTS race at Talladega Superspeedway.  TRD-058 is the only chassis that Bodine has ever raced for Germain Racing on the superspeedways of Talladega and Daytona, and it has been driven to Victory Lane on four separate occasions.  Mike Hillman Jr. will once again be atop the pit box calling the shots for the defending series champion as this marks the 12th race of a collaborative effort between Germain Racing and Randy Moss Motorsports to field the No. 5 Tundra.  Bodine has finished no worse than 13th in those 11 previous races, with an average finish of 8.7.  Bodine is racing the NTB/Service Central paint scheme for the fourth time this season (Kansas, Texas, Atlanta).

·         Track Stats… Bodine leads all active truck series drivers in top-fives (4), top-10s (4) and laps led (85) at Talladega Superspeedway.  In 5 truck series starts at Talladega, Bodine is a two-time winner with one Pole Award.  In addition to his NCWTS stats, Bodine has one pole at Talladega in NASCAR Nationwide Series competition.

·         Closing the Gap… Bodine has not finished outside of the top four in the final truck series point standings since he began competing full-time in the series in 2005.  With his fifth-place finish last weekend at Las Vegas, Bodine advanced one position to move into seventh place in the driver point standings and is now just 39 points out of the top four with four races remaining.

·         Watch and Listen… The Coca-Cola 250 from Talladega Superspeedway will be broadcast live on SPEED, MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio, channel 90, on Saturday afternoon.  SPEED kicks off its pre-race coverage at 3:30 p.m. EDT, and MRN Radio will begin its live broadcast at 3:45 p.m. EDT on Saturday, October 22.  SPEED will also broadcast live coverage of qualifying on Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. EDT.

Todd Bodine on Talladega Superspeedway:

Talladega is a thinking game…

“It’s a chess match. It’s a thinking game. You’ve got to think way ahead, think about who you’re racing with, think about how you want to race…there are a lot of strategies involved. It’s a lot different than normal-type racing. You have to really think about what’s going on around you and plan each move. We hope we can make the right moves with the NTB/Service Central Tundra this week.”

It’s a Different Animal…

“It doesn’t matter what track you’re coming from or going to, Talladega is a different animal. You have to take it for what it’s worth and treat it differently.”

Crew chiefs always say the race truck is in driver’s hands once race begins.  What can your pit crew do for you?

“The biggest impact the pit crew has once the race begins is making good stops. The crew can make some adjustments, but, it’s true, there’s not a lot that can be done to change the handling once the driver and crew chief decide on a setup for the truck for the race. Good pit stops are critical. You can work your way back to the front, it just takes time to get there and it puts you in another whole situation of risks driving from the back to the front.”

62 Talladega Preview: South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra

Posted by lori in Untagged

Gaughan Taking on Talladega in South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra

Gaughan drives the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra

He is an 8-time winner in the Truck Series

He holds two NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Championship Titles

Gaughan won in the GT class in the Rolex 24 at Daytona this year

Mooresville, N.C. (Oct. 20, 2011) - Brendan Gaughan and the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra crew return to superspeedway racing this week as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series unleashes its brand of excitement on the fans of Talladega Superspeedway. Gaughan is one of two Germain Racing Tundra drivers that can boast leading laps in each of NASCAR’s top three divisions at Talladega. He earned his best finish in the sport’s highest division at Talladega, a track which he says is definitely unique.

“Talladega is its own animal. It’s a little bit bigger and it’s got a little bit more speed and a wider corner than Daytona. At Talladega, where the finish line is it almost makes you race an extra lap there. A lot of things happen on that short chute coming to the finish line,” said Gaughan.

Gaughan has three Truck Series starts at Talladega, all have resulted in lead-lap finishes. His best start was in 2008, 20th, and his best finish was 2006, 12th. Of his three Truck Series events, Gaughan has yet to race the No. 62 in Trucks at Talladega. He says the race is 90 laps of preparing for the final 10 miles of the event.

“Racing Talladega, every move you make up until the end of the race, you are just testing to see what will happen if you make that move. If you make a move that costs you ten spots – that’s OK. You are just testing to see what will happen. The whole race, all you are doing is getting prepared so when it comes down to the end, you know how your Toyota handles and what it takes to move forward when you need to at the end,” explained Gaughan.

Watch and Listen: Brendan Gaughan and the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra competing in the Coca-Cola 250 from Talladega Superspeedway will be broadcast live on SPEED, MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio, channel 90, on Saturday afternoon. EDT.

Germain Racing has earned two championship titles in the Truck Series. The Toyota team owns 22 victories and 9 pole awards in the series that continues to grow ratings on SPEED. For more information on Germain Racing, visit www.GermainRacing.com or follow the team on Twitter @GermainRacing.

Gaughan Preview - Las Vegas - No. 62 Big O Tires Tundra

Posted by lori in Untagged

Hometown Gaughan Racing Big O Tires Tundra in Las Vegas

 - Gaughan drives the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra

 - He is an 8-time winner in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

 - He holds two NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Championship Titles

 - Gaughan won in the GT class in the Rolex 24 at Daytona this year

 - He has one win and one pole award at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Mooresville, N.C. (Oct. 10, 2011) - Brendan Gaughan has been to victory lane at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He’s also suffered some forgettable races in front of his hometown fans. Gaughan hopes Saturday’s race is un-forgettable for him and the No. 62 Big O Tires/South Point Tundra crew of Germain Racing.

“It’s Vegas. It’s home, so of course I’m excited. We’re having the South Point bowling tournament for the crew guys again this year. It’s really about giving the crew guys a chance to have a good time,” said Gaughan of getting home, racing there, and spending some time with fellow NASCAR Camping World Truck Series crew members in a bowling tournament hosted by the South Point Hotel & Casino.

Gaughan’s one victory in Vegas came from the pole position. He and his crew have prepared a truck chassis he raced most recently at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, for Saturday’s contest at LVMS.

“Our strong run at New Hampshire is our precursor for heading to Las Vegas. We’re taking the New Hampshire truck to Vegas. It has been to the wind tunnel recently and it has a different downforce balance than our other chassis. I think I’m gonna like the truck there. We will be racing for a service center there called Big O Tires, and we’ll have the South Point Hotel & Casino represented on the bed top of the Tundra. We’re looking to rekindle some old magic at home,” smiled Gaughan, who will wheel chassis GR-017 at Las Vegas.

Saturday’s race, The Smith’s 350 from Las Vegas Motor Speedway, will be broadcast live on SPEED, MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio, channel 90, on Saturday afternoon.  SPEED kicks off its pre-race coverage at 3:00 p.m. EDT, and MRN Radio will begin its live broadcast at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 15.

No. 5 International Trucks/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra News and Notes

  • This Week’s Tundra… The No. 5 International Trucks/Monaco RVs team and Germain Racing driver Todd Bodine will utilize GR-018 in Saturday’s 146-lap NCWTS race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  This is the same truck that Bodine most recently drove to a seventh-place finish two weeks ago at Kentucky Speedway, and it was raced earlier this season at Chicago (13th), Atlanta (9th), Michigan (11th), Pocono (12th) and Nashville (6th).   Mike Hillman Jr. will once again be atop the pit box calling the shots for the defending series champion as this marks the 11th  race of a collaborative effort between Germain Racing and Randy Moss Motorsports to field the No. 5 Tundra.  Bodine has finished no worse than 13th in those 10 previous races, with an average finish of 9.1.

·         Track Stats… Bodine scored his fourth of 21 career Camping World Truck Series victories at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in September 2005.  In total, Bodine has four top-five and five top-10 finishes in seven NCWTS starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  Bodine also has one pole and has not started a race outside of the top 10 in truck series competition, and leads all active truck series drivers in laps led at LVMS with 216. In addition to his Truck Series statistics, Bodine went to Victory Lane at Las Vegas in the Nationwide Series in 2001.

·         Closing the Gap… Bodine has not finished outside of the top four in the final truck series point standings since he began competing full-time in the series in 2005.  With his seventh-place finish last race at Kentucky Speedway, Bodine is now tied for eighth place in the driver point standings and is just 33 points out of the top four with five races remaining.

·         Meet Todd... Fans in the Las Vegas area will have the opportunity to meet Todd Bodine on Thursday, October 13, in advance of the truck series race at LVMS.  The driver of the No. 5 International Trucks/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra will meet fans and sign autographs at the Boot Barn (7265 Las Vegas Boulevard South), as part of a program with Germain Racing sponsor Georgia Boot.  The Georgia Boot show truck will be on display from 12 – 5 p.m. PDT at Boot Barn, and Todd will make a two-hour appearance from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. PDT on Thursday.

·         Watch and Listen… The Smith’s 350 from Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be broadcast live on SPEED, MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio, channel 90, on Saturday afternoon.  SPEED kicks off its pre-race coverage at 3:00 p.m. EDT, and MRN Radio will begin its live broadcast at 3:15 p.m. EDT on Saturday, October 15.

Todd Bodine on Las Vegas Speedway:

“Compared to other mile and a half tracks, Las Vegas Motor Speedway is unique in its banking. It has progressive banking, but also, even though the track surface is fairly new, it has a lot of bumps. We didn’t run as well as we’d like at Kentucky, but we feel we learned a lot about the bumps and track conditions that should help us at Las Vegas and through the rest of the season. We’ll know when we get the International Trucks/Monaco RVs Tundra on track Friday in Vegas.”

“Our setups haven’t been as good as they were in the past. This year, Goodyear has been giving us different tires than we are used to racing at a lot of these tracks. It’s more than halfway through the season and the changeup in tires has kind of thrown us for a loop. We think we’ve figured it out and when we get to Las Vegas we’ll be able to test that and see where we are.”

“I love Las Vegas. We get to stay at the South Point Hotel & Casino with Mr. Gaughan. I’m looking forward to the bowling tournament to benefit Speedway Children’s Charities and just enjoying being in Las Vegas.”

No. 5 Valvoline Toyota Tundra News and Notes

  • This Week’s Tundra… The No. 5 Valvoline team and Germain Racing driver Todd Bodine will utilize GR-018 in Saturday’s 150-lap NCWTS race at Kentucky Speedway.  This is the same truck that Bodine most recently drove to a 13th-place finish two weeks ago at Chicagoland Speedway, and it was raced earlier this season at Atlanta (9th), Michigan (11th), Pocono (12th) and Nashville (6th).   Mike Hillman Jr. will once again be atop the pit box calling the shots for the defending series champion as this marks the 10th race of a collaborative effort between Germain Racing and Randy Moss Motorsports to field the No. 5 Tundra.  Bodine has finished no worse than 13th in those nine previous races, with an average finish of 9.3.

·         Track Stats… Bodine scored his 21st career – and most recent – Camping World Truck Series victory at Kentucky Speedway last September.  In total, Bodine has one win, three top-five and four top-10 finishes in seven NCWTS starts at Kentucky Speedway, including a runner-up finish in the inaugural Truck Series event.  Bodine has accrued the most points of any driver (355) in the last three NCWTS races at Kentucky Speedway.  In addition to his Truck Series statistics, Bodine went to Victory Lane at Kentucky in the Nationwide Series in 2002.

·         Picking up Places… Bodine has not finished outside of the top four in the final truck series point standings since he began competing full-time in the series in 2005.  With his eighth-place finish last weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Bodine is now tied for ninth place in the driver point standings and is just 21 points out of the top five with six races remaining.

·         Watch and Listen… The Kentucky 225 from Kentucky Speedway will be broadcast live on SPEED, MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio, channel 90, on Saturday afternoon.  SPEED kicks off its pre-race coverage at 7:30 p.m. EDT, and MRN Radio will begin its live broadcast at 7:45 p.m. EDT on Saturday, October 1.  Saturday afternoon will also feature a tape-delayed broadcast of qualifying at 6:00 p.m. EDT on SPEED Channel.

Todd Bodine on Kentucky Speedway:

“Kentucky is a perfect track for our team to race this weekend. We’ve had some struggles, but we’ve definitely seen some progress and Kentucky is a great track for us to really get the chance to see what we’ve learned and have a good weekend. The track is a good track for me, personally, and it’s been a great track for the team. I think it holds a special place for our team because two of our sponsors, Valvoline and Georgia Boot, are both located near the track. I am looking forward to seeing what we can get from our No. 5 Valvoline Tundra this weekend.”

Kentucky NCWTS Race 2 Preview: Brendan Gaughan

Posted by lori in Untagged

Gaughan Says Swimming with Sharks is Easier than Racing in the Truck Series

Gaughan drives the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra

He is an 8-time winner in the Truck Series

He holds two NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Championship Titles

Gaughan won in the GT class in the Rolex 24 at Daytona this year

Mooresville, N.C. (Sep. 28, 2011) - Brendan Gaughan and the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra crew have come into a smooth streak. The team has put together a string of performances where the driver and crew have loved the truck and the team effort. All involved are looking to Kentucky Speedway to score a finish that reflects the progress the team has made lately.

“Kentucky Speedway is my style of place and it’s a flatter mile-and-a-half that’s hard to drive for some people. I love the bumps, love the track. Can’t wait to see what our South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra will do for us there,” said Gaughan.

Gaughan finished third in July at Kentucky, his best finish of the season. He has been in position for several top-five, even top-three finishes since then but a variety of miscues has kept him just outside the top ten when the checkered flag waves. One small miscue makes a big difference, or, as the Las Vegas native puts it, diving in the shark tank is a lot more predictable than racing against the odds and competition in the Truck Series each week.

“Well, to be honest, diving in the shark tank is a whole lot easier than racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. There’s no question about it. The sharks aren’t going to do anything crazy to you! Most often when they are in a tank, they are pretty well fed so you don’t have to worry about being a snack. Diving in the tank is more about relaxing, observing and just letting the sharks swim around you. In the Truck Series, the drivers are more like the sharks probably at feeding time. We are all after the best we can get and there’s no telling how we’ll all go about getting it,” said Gaughan, who dove in the Newport Aquarium shark tank in Cincinnati as part of a media event heading into the Kentucky race weekend.

Watch Gaughan in the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra at Kentucky Speedway on SPEED. Racing action is Saturday, October 1st, 8:00 PM. Tune in early to catch the NCWTS Setup at 7:30 PM. Not in front of a TV? Tune your radio to your local MRN affiliate.

No. 5 International Trucks/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra News and Notes

  • This Week’s Tundra… The No. 5 International Trucks/Monaco RVs team and Germain Racing driver Todd Bodine will utilize GR-019 in Saturday’s 175-lap NCWTS race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.  This is the same truck that Bodine most recently drove to a third-place finish last month at Bristol.  Mike Hillman Jr. will once again be atop the pit box calling the shots for the defending series champion as this marks the ninth race of a collaborative effort between Germain Racing and Randy Moss Motorsports to field the No. 5 Tundra.  Bodine has finished no worse than 13th in those eight previous races, with an average finish of 9.5.

·         Track Stats… Bodine has raced in each of NASCAR’s three national divisions at New Hampshire.  His best finish is 2nd in the Nationwide Series (2002).  His best start is 2nd also in the Nationwide Series (1997) where he has led 213 laps at Loudon.  Bodine has two top-five and three top-10 finishes in seven NCWTS starts at NHMS.  Bodine has raced modifieds at New Hampshire and may be seen helping Corey LaJoie throughout the race weekend

·         Holding Steady… With his 13th-place finish last week at Chicagoland Speedway, Bodine maintained his 10th-place standing in the driver points and is just 18 points out of the top five.

·         Watch and Listen… The F.W. Webb 175 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway will be broadcast live on SPEED, MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio, channel 90, on Saturday afternoon.  SPEED kicks off its pre-race coverage at 2:30 p.m. EDT, and MRN Radio will begin its live broadcast at 2:45 p.m. EDT on Saturday, September 24.

Todd Bodine on New Hampshire Motor Speedway:

“New Hampshire is a special track – it’s definitely like a home coming. Our team has run really well there before and I’ve been able to get some good results at New Hampshire through the years. We are going back with a different setup and thought process for our No. 5 International Trucks/Monaco RVs Tundra this time to try to do something different. We really don’t need much to make the difference between winning or losing there, but, we need a bit of something so we are trying to look at everything with kind of fresh eyes and see how it works for us.

“If there’s a track where you have to have the best of a chassis setup and the best horsepower, New Hampshire is it. You have to have everything to be good. The truck has to handle on the long, flat corners and it needs the horsepower to pull down the straightaways. It takes the whole package and we hope we have that with our International Trucks/Monaco RVs Tundra this week.”

“Track position is very important at New Hampshire since it’s a track where it is so hard to pass. There are multiple grooves, but none of them are faster.”

NHMS preview: South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra, Brendan Gaughan

Posted by lori in Untagged

New Hampshire Next for South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra Driver

 - Gaughan drives the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra

- He is an 8-time winner in the Truck Series

- He holds two NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Championship Titles

- Gaughan won in the GT class in the Rolex 24 at Daytona this year

- Gaughan has raced in each of NASCAR’s three national series at NHMS

- He has 6 Truck Series races to his credit there

- His best finish is 5th and his best start is 2nd

- Gaughan has earned a win on a former NASCAR one-mile track—The Milwaukee Mile

Mooresville, N.C. (Sep. 21, 2011) - New Hampshire Motor Speedway is a track that Brendan Gaughan is only cautiously optimistic about. He admits he has had some great race trucks and race cars at the Loudon, NH, based 1-mile oval, but, he has had his fair share of run-ins and at the track, too. For the eight-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner, New Hampshire is certainly a track he’d like to conquer—and one he knows can be tricky for him.

“New Hampshire is New Hampshire. It’s a bit like Milwaukee but with more grip since the pavement is newer. I have had good race trucks there but it’s a bit frustrating to me because my finishes at the track don’t really show it. I have been caught up in other people’s problems there. You name it, I think it’s happened to me at New Hampshire. That said, I’m looking forward to getting there to see what our No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra will do. Our team has had some strong performances in the past few races and I expect to see more of the same at New Hampshire,” explained Gaughan.

Gaughan will race chassis number GR-017 for Saturday’s 175 laps/185.15 miles at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Watch Gaughan in the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on SPEED. Racing action at is Saturday, September 24th 3:00 PM. Tune in early to catch the NCWTS Setup at 2:30 PM. Not in front of a TV? Tune your radio to your local MRN affiliate.

Brendan Gaughan holds eight Truck Series victories to go along with his two K&N Pro Series West championship titles. He currently ranks 13th in the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver’s points standings.

GEICO Camry, Casey Mears: Chicagoland Race Recap

Posted by lori in Untagged

MEARS AND THE GECKO NET FRUITFUL WEEKEND IN THE WINDY CITY

Joliet, IL (September 19, 2011) – Coming off of a strong week at Richmond, Mears and the GEICO Racing team looked forward to seeing the Gecko in Chicago when they arrived for the GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.  Mears arrived early on Thursday and spent the vast majority of his time doing media interviews along with appearances where he greeted fans and further promoted the GEICO brand.

When Mears took to the racetrack for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice on Friday, he did not find the speed for which he was looking.  At the conclusion of both practices, the GEICO team was left with more questions than answers, as Mears sat 35th and 40th in the respective sessions.  A previous polesitter and winner at Chicagoland Speedway, Mears knows full well how to navigate the 1.5-mile tri-oval, but his expertise did not provide relief during qualifying.  Mears was forced to use his Top 35 status to secure his position in the race, as his qualifying laps would relegate him to 41st on the starting grid.

Mears and the GEICO team arrived early Sunday morning preparing to take to the grid for the GEICO 400, but instead found themselves sidelined as Mother Nature had her way with the speedway.  For the third time in the last six races, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series saw their race postponed due to rain.
With overcast skies looming and a grandstand full of dedicated fans, Mears and the #13 GEICO Camry finally took the green flag at noon (ET) on Monday afternoon.  Starting the race in 41st, Mears quickly began to make up ground and took over the 38th position by the close of the opening lap.  When the scheduled competition caution was displayed on Lap 30, Mears took the opportunity to visit pit road where the Germain Racing team supplied him with four fresh tires, a tank of fuel and a wedge adjustment.

Mears’ progress was later thwarted just after visiting pit road for a scheduled green flag pit stop on Lap 68.  No sooner than Mears departed pit road, the caution flag waved, instantly sending the #13 GEICO Camry two laps down to the leaders and forcing Mears to spend the balance of his afternoon trying to regain his position on the lead lap.
After taking the wave-around under caution, Mears was left just one lap down, but that nearly changed on Lap 78.  Robby Gordon cut down a tire and quickly moved to the bottom of the racetrack just in front of the GEICO Camry.  Mears narrowly avoided peril and continued on his way.
Mears was running in the 34th position when a debris caution on Lap 144 offered the GEICO team the opportunity to gain track position.  Crew chief, Bootie Barker, ordered Mears to remain on the racetrack and take the wave-around rather than come down pit road for service.  The gamble would be that Mears would have just enough fuel to complete another ten laps after the race went green, so he would need a caution to come out or otherwise visit pit road under green flag conditions.  If the caution flag were to wave, the #13 GEICO Camry would return to the lead lap.
Mears restarted in the 33rd position on Lap 151, but unfortunately, the caution did not come out and the GEICO Camry would be forced to travel down pit road under green on Lap 161 for a much-needed service.  For a second time, Mears would experience heartbreak at the hands of the caution flag.  Just two laps after he returned to the racing surface following his pit stop, the caution was displayed when Jamie McMurray’s engine gave way, sending the field under caution and Mears two laps down.

With 50 laps remaining in the race, Barker warned Mears that the #13 GEICO Camry was two laps short on fuel.  Mears was not alone in this scenario, as much of the field was presented with the same dilemma.  Mears took the necessary precautions and was able to save enough fuel to take the checkered flag.  After starting 41st, Mears and the GEICO team persevered through a challenging afternoon and collected 12 positions en route to a 29th place finish in the GEICO 400.
“It was really fun to come to the track this weekend and see GEICO plastered everywhere, even on the outside wall of the racetrack.  I entered turn four at one point and thought I saw a huge blow up gecko,” Mears joked.  “The weather was unpleasant on Sunday, but I was glad I was able to spend some time with our guests from GEICO’s corporate office and thank them for their tremendous support as we continue building our race program.”

Mears’ 29th place finish at Chicagoland Speedway allowed Germain Racing to maintain their 32nd position in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Owner Point Standings.

LOOSE HANDLING CONDITION PLAGUES MAX PAPIS IN CHICAGOLAND

JOLIET, Ill. (September 16, 2011) – With only eight NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races left on the 2011 schedule, Max Papis and his GEICO Racing team were looking for a strong run at Chicagoland Speedway on Friday night. During the 150-lap race, Papis and the No. 9 Toyota Tundra battled a loose handling condition. Despite only three cautions leaving the team with a small realm of opportunity to make adjustments, Papis captured an 18th-place finish under the lights. This was Papis’ 13th top-20 finish this season.

“We fought hard all night long,” said Papis, after the race. “The GEICO team continues to keep pushing and never give up no matter what we are facing. The truck was just really loose all night and we got it better towards the end of the race but we ran out of time. We will head back to the shop and keep working. I think we will be good in New Hampshire.”

After two practice sessions, Papis took to the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval for qualifying. The Como, Italy native clocked a lap of 31.334 seconds (172.337 mph) to secure the 19th starting position. Shortly after 8 p.m. ET, Papis and the rest of the field started the Fast Five 225. The first caution came quickly on lap 11 for debris in turn 2. The GEICO Toyota Tundra was loose right from the start, prompting crew chief Randy Goss to bring Papis to pit road for fuel and wedge adjustment. Papis took off from 20th-place on the lap 14 restart.

The Germain Racing Toyota continued to be hindered by the loose condition as Papis entered and exited the corners. The leaders who did not pit under the first caution were forced to make green flag pit stops around lap 35. Because Papis topped off with fuel during his earlier stop, the GEICO machine was able to continue longer than his competitors. The No. 9 red and blue Tundra moved as high as fifth before pitting under green on lap 56 for four tires, fuel, and adjustments.

A short three circuits later, the second caution slowed the pace on lap 59 for fluid on the track. Since the team just visited pit road, Papis took the wave around to receive one lap back and be in contention for the Lucky Dog Award. On lap 66, the field returned to green flag conditions with Papis scored in the 22nd position.

Within 10 laps, Papis returned to the top-20 in 18th-place as the racer continued to drive through the loose handling condition. The fast pace persisted as only the third caution was displayed on lap 83 for debris. Papis reported that the GEICO Tundra was “loose center off” before returning to pit road for four tires, fuel, and an air pressure adjustment.

Papis was scored in the 20th position on the lap 88 restart. By lap 100, the Gecko was back up to 18th-place. The final 50 laps remained caution-free, forcing teams to return to pit road for fuel under green conditions. The loose handling condition got better as the run went on, so on lap 131 Papis brought his GEICO Toyota to the attention of his crew one last time for four tires, fuel, and minor adjustments. Over the final 10 laps, Papis was able to hold his spot on the track and cross the finish line in the 18th position.

With his solid finish, Papis currently sits in 16th-place in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver championship point standings. ‘Mad Max’ is only two points behind Justin Lofton who holds the 15th position. The Truck Series returns to action this Saturday, September 24th for the running of the F.W. Webb 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Watch the action live on SPEED Channel at 3 p.m. ET.
